Surviving the holidays while grieving seminar offered

GriefShare: Surviving the Holidays is a seminar for people facing the holidays after a loved one’s death. The seminar will take place on Nov. 4 from 1-3 p.m. at Good Hope Lutheran Church, located at 98 Homestead Dr. in Boardman. The seminar is free. The seminar features practical suggestions and reassurance through video interviews with counselors, grief experts and other people who have experienced the holidays after their loved one’s death. Topics to be discussed include dealing with hard-hitting emotions, what to do about traditions, how to survive social events and where to find comfort and strength. Those who attend will receive a survival guide filled with practical tips, encouraging words and exercises for daily help through the holiday season. Local church hosts rummage sale

There will be a church rummage sale and food fair at Trinity Fellowship Church, located at 4749 South Ave. in Boardman on Oct. 20 from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m.

Local Trick-or-Treat

Trick-or-Treat in Boardman will take place on Oct. 31 from 5-7 p.m. Have a safe and fun Halloween!

Marching band to be in concert

The Boardman Spartan marching band will be in concert on Oct. 27 at 7 p.m. in the Boardman High School gymnasium. This annual event is a retrospective of the 2018 marching season. The band will be seated and playing all the music from the field shows while the Spartan Sweethearts and Silks perform their visual routines on the gym floor. Immediately following the concert, audience members will be invited across the hall for a reception where they will be able to sample cupcakes baked, decorated and displayed by teams of Band students. Cupcake wars BSMB style will be based on the hit Food Network reality show “Cupcake Wars.” Participating students must create, decorate and present cupcakes that best capture the spirit of this year’s Spartan Marching Band show: “Saturday Night Live.” A panel of judges will evaluate the entries on taste while all concert-goers will be able to cast their vote on best presentation. The 173-member Spartan marching band, directed by Thomas Ruggieri, Timothy Tuite and Michael Shevock, maintains a busier performance schedule than most. The Band has played 27 events since August including a Mahoning Valley Scrappers game, three local Band Nights, and lots of school and community events. Candy-free event offered on Oct. 20

The seventh annual Trick Nor Treat Halloween candy-free event at Beyond Expectations South Bridge Therapy and Learning Center, located at 725 Boardman-Canfield Road, Suite E-1, in Boardman, on Oct. 20 from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. There will be non-food Trick-or-Treating, inclusive for children with food allergies, special diets or whose parents just don’t want more sugar. The event will offer pumpkin decorating, crafts, Halloween games, “Bunnies in Baskets,” a Chinese auction and more. This event is free and open to the community. Local studio hosts auditions for “The Great Russian Nutcracker”

Ruth’s Dance and Fitness Co. LLC, located at 721 Boardman-Poland Road, Suite 100A, was chosen as the host studio for “The Great Russian Nutcracker” with The Moscow Ballet, and auditions will take place on Oct. 20 at Ruth’s Dance & Fitness Co. LLC. The audition is open to ballet dancers in the community who are ages 6-18 who may be interested in performing in the ballet. Check in time and registration will start promptly at 10:30 a.m. and auditions will start at 11:30 a.m. starting with the youngest children first. Students will need to stay for a few hours because they may be double cast in two roles. If chosen, students will need to be available on Oct. 21 at 11 a.m. to rehearse with the Russian dancers. Rehearsals may go into late afternoon on Oct. 21, but students may leave when they are finished learning the choreography of the pieces they have been cast in. Also, if chosen to be in “The Great Russian Nutcracker,” students will need to pay a casting fee of $50. The final performance will take place at DeYor Performing Arts Center on Dec. 6 at 7 p.m. The dress rehearsal and the performance will take place on the same day.

Valley Legacy Awards winners announced for 2018

The 2018 Valley Legacy Awards annual luncheon took place on Oct. 10 at The Maronite Center. The awards recognized 22 outstanding senior and senior advocate nominees from Mahoning, Trumbull and Columbiana Counties. Winners were announced during the lunch. Locally, Rich Morgan of Boardman received the Outstanding Senior Award for Professional Excellence.

Bonding with babies and books

This event is for caregivers and their little ones who are 6-23 months. There will be 20 minutes of language enrichment including rhymes, songs and stories, followed by time to play and socialize, at the Boardman library every Tuesday at 10 a.m.

Audobon Society to have presentation on Oct. 23

Audubon Society/Mahoning Valley invites the public to “Famous People and their Fowl Obsessions” at 7 p.m. on Oct. 23 at the Canfield library. From political and sports figures to actors, music composers and Nobel prize winners, this presentation looks at famous people who are also birdwatchers, with some surprising and interesting facts thrown in, and the impact that their bird watching has had on their careers, their private lives and perhaps yours as well. The speaker, Dwight Chasar, a retired Akron-area industrial research organic chemist, will also identify birds that these famous people favored in their hobby.

Local retired teachers association to have Nov. 14 meeting

Mahoning Retired Teachers Association will meet on Nov. 14 at Drake’s Landing in Canfield. The social hour will begin at 11 a.m. and lunch at 11:45 a.m., followed by the meeting and program. Susan Harris will preside. The American Legion will present colors in honor of Veteran’s Day. Scholarship chairperson Sonia Tsvetkoff will introduce and present MRTA’s scholarships to YSU School of Education students. Deana DeLuca will present a program on “Mindfulness and Meditation.” This month’s community service project will be donations to the Canfield Veterans Auxiliary. Grilled chicken salad or the buffet, which will feature roasted turkey, will be served. All area educators are invited to attend. Boardman Friends to host book sale

The Friends of the Boardman Library book sale will take place on Oct. 20 from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. at the Boardman library.

Friendly Squares dance

The Friendly Squares will host their monthly square dance on Nov. 10 from 7:30-10 p.m. at the Niles SCOPE Center, located at 14 E. State St. in Niles. Gene Hammond will be the caller and Frankie Hammond will be cuing line dances. The theme for the dance is Veterans. This will be a high/low dance with alternating tips for new dancers currently taking lessons and tips for more experienced dancers. Dress is casual and light refreshments will be served. Senator Schiavoni to share memories of a lifetime

Ohio State Senator Joe Schiavoni, will share memories of his lifetime in Mahoning Valley and career in the Ohio Statehouse on Oct. 20 at 10 a.m. at Kravitz’s Deli meeting room, located at 3135 Belmont Avenue in Liberty, for the William Holmes McGuffey Historical Society. The program is open to the public. Admission is $5 for members and $6 for non-members. Refreshments will be served and a 50/50 raffle will take place, to benefit the society’s education mission. Mooney Class of 1963 to have 55th reunion

The Cardinal Mooney Class of 1963 55th reunion will take place on Oct. 20. The event was planned by the reunion committee based on feedback from the 70th birthday party in 2015. Events include a meeting in the Radius Room of Fellows Riverside Gardens in Mill Creek Park from 1-4 p.m., a Mass at St. Dominic at 5 p.m., a presentation by Mark Oles, President of Cardinal Mooney, and tour at 6:15 p.m. at Cardinal Mooney High School and an evening mixer at 7 p.m. at Stonebridge Grill and Tavern, located at 1497 Boardman Canfield Road. Refreshments will be provided, and a cash bar and dinner is available to purchase from a limited menu. The fest of the activities are included at a cost of $30 per person. Tenth annual Danielle Scott Memorial Writing Contest

Danielle Scott was a beloved Teen Advisory Board member whom was lost to cancer. The Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County is sponsoring the 10th annual Danielle Scott Memorial Writing Contest to honor Danielle and her love of writing. Teens may enter one poem with a theme of their choice. Entries may be submitted online at http://www.libraryvisit.org/teens/danielle or on standard 8.5 inch by 11 inch paper to any public library in Mahoning County Oct. 1-31. If you submit your entry online, make sure you select the writing type (poem) and be sure to include your phone number. Hard copies must be typed. Be sure to include your name, telephone number, grade and school on your entry. Entries are not returnable. One winner will be chosen and will be awarded a plaque and a monetary prize. All entrants must be in grades 7-12 and either live in or attend school in Mahoning County.

Gamblers Anonymous meetings

A meeting of Gamblers Anonymous will take place on Fridays at 7:30 p.m. at Westminster Presbyterian Church, located at 119 Stadium Drive in Boardman. Another G.A. meeting will take place on Sundays at 7:30 p.m. at the Christ Presbyterian Church, located at 3425 Hopkins Road in Youngstown (Cornersburg). There is no charge for the meetings, although collections are taken up at each meeting to provide for coffee, sugar and creamer, treats and free literature. The average contribution given by members at most meetings is $2. Meetings last about one and a half hours and are both closed meetings, or, you must have suffered from a gambling addiction to attend. The Youngstown-area G.A. groups are friendly and welcoming and established members love to see new members join the fold. They are more than happy to help suffering gamblers and are knowledgeable about how to stay clean from this dreadful disease.

There will be a blood drive by the Mahoning Chapter of the American Red Cross at the Boardman library on Oct. 30 from 1:30-6:30 p.m. to serve the needs of St. Elizabeth Hospital. For appointments, call 1-800-RED-CROSS (1-800-733-2767). This event is for adults.

Overeaters Anonymous is offering meetings at several local locations and on a variety of days. On Saturdays at 10 a.m., there will be a meeting at St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church in the Church Hall, Room 2, located at 4453 Warren-Sharon Road in Vienna, Ohio.
