The Spanish club at Poland Seminary High School recently hosted its first Trunk or Treat event.
Heather Ramsey, a Spanish teacher at Poland for eight years and the advisor of the Spanish club, organized the event.
“This is the very first trunk or treat we ever had,” Ramsey said. “It is mostly Spanish club students but I did open it up to anyone in the high school who wanted to volunteer.”
The club asked for a $3 donation from those who attended the event, which went to support Spanish club scholarships.
“We use them to give scholarships annually to students who are either majoring or minoring in Spanish,” Ramsey said.
According to Ramsey, students decorated their own trunks and provided their own candy to pass out to community members.
Students gathered in the Poland Seminary High School parking lot, volunteering their time to help support the club.
“The students really have done everything; I have done nothing,” Ramsey said.
Students from Ramsey’s Spanish four class also created ofrendas to honor members of the Poland school community who have passed away.
“An ofrenda is basically an offering to remember someone who has passed away,” Ramsey said.
She explained that the traditional ofrenda includes items that the person liked, pictures, drinks, candles, food and more.
Students created three ofrendas for Kate Spade, Suzanne Van Meter, a french teacher, and Carmella Smallhoover, a former Poland principal.
There are currently 155 student members of the Spanish club, according to Ramsey.
“I hope to make this an annual event,” Ramsey said. “To continue it for anyone interested in supporting the Spanish Club with their scholarship.”
