Museum showcases area artists

The Butler Institute of American Art’s annual exhibition of local artists is on display at the Trumbull Branch, 9350 E. Market St., through Dec. 23.

The Area Artists Annual Exhibition, in its 80th year, is a juried show that includes works in all media by artists who reside in Mahoning, Trumbull and Columbiana counties in Ohio, as well as Mercer and Lawrence counties in Pennsylvania. Admission is free.

The juror was Greg Moring, sculptor and assistant dean of the College of Fine and Performing Arts at Youngstown State University. A total of 90 original artworks were selected out of a total of 180 entries submitted by 100 artists.

Alan Charles Orr of Youngstown was awarded Best in Show for his oil painting “PIN UP not fade away,” depicting the four members of The Beatles and featuring nine pushpins.

The exhibition’s annual Robert Yalch Memorial Award was given to Bryce Herrington of Sharon, Pa., for his watercolor work.

Other top prize winners include: Thomas Harwood, Niles, “McGuffey Epilogue,” watercolor on paper – first place; Rachel Griffin, Sandy Lake, Pa., “A Texan,” oil painting – second place; Guy Shively, Austintown, “Lanie and Abby Go Cruisin’,” enamel on plywood – third place.

Honorable Mentions were awarded to Robert Begala, Canfield; Anthony Campanzini, Youngstown; Robert Demechko, Poland; Diane Drapcho, Canfield; Carol Gallo, Girard; Edward Jones, Youngstown; Michele Perelman, New Castle, Pa.; Cori Surano, Hermitage, Pa.; and William Walker, Austintown.
