YOUNGSTOWN

The Simply Slavic festival’s annual baking competition will take place June 9 at 1 p.m. at the SMARTS office on the first floor of the Ohio One Building, 25 E. Boardman St., downtown.

The region’s best amateur bakers are invited to enter their favorite recipe to the contest. An entry form and the rules and prizes can be found online at simplyslavic.org.

Interested participants should submit their entry form with a $5 nonrefundable entry fee and a description of their baked good in 75 words or less. Remember to highlight pertinent information such as its Slavic roots, holidays at which it might be used and where you first ate it. Mail it to Simply Slavic Baking Contest, 4442 Rita Ave., Youngstown, OH 44515. Entries will be accepted until June 1.

The public is welcome to come enjoy the competition. Admission is free, and complimentary coffee will be provided. A sale of the homemade entries will be a tasty part of the festivities.

The event takes place one week before the annual Simply Slavic festival, which is, June 16.

“We moved the contest to its own date so that the bakers, judges and organizers can focus on this special part of our festival without any distraction,” said Mary Margaret Hovanes, contest chair.” We think it is important to tie a fun time back to the roots of our heritage, and that’s easier to do when it’s not taking place in the middle of the busy day.”
