Paint a cake for Father’s Day
Sip or chug a drink from Dairy Queen and paint a DQ cake for Father’s Day. They will provide you with a blank DQ cake, which will serve as your very own “canvas.” Do it all by yourself, or qualified cake decorators will be on hand to show you how to border, or how to use an airbrush. Add sprinkles, colorful whipped cream icing, gel and ribbons. This is an open house event. It should only take about 15 minutes to decorate your DQ cake. Remember, it is a ice cream cake, so it will begin to melt if you take too long. They will be happy to keep your cake in the freezer for you so that you can eat and relax. The cost to participate is the cost of the DQ cake and your drink. You do not need an appointment. Walk-ins are welcome. However, they can not guarantee you the size you may want or the attention from the decorator that you may need if you do not call ahead and have them hold your cake and let them know you are coming. Rummage sale to take place during festival
There will be a rummage sale with numerous offerings during the annual festival at Immaculate Heart of Mary Church, located at 4490 Norquest Blvd. in Austintown, on May 30 until June 3. The rummage sale hours will take place from 6-9 p.m. nightly. Special prices will be offered on June 3.
Local flavor comes to a community garden near you
Want to learn more about growing vegetables, soils and plant production? If so, mark your calendars to join OSU Extension staff and Master Gardener Volunteers at local community gardens this summer. Programs will take place every Monday from May 28 until Aug. 13 at 6 p.m. Topics such as vegetable growing patterns, production details and soil characteristics will be discussed. This program is geared for participants of all ages, and is beneficial to the backyard gardener just wanting to learn some tips and tricks, or for someone wanting to start their own community garden. Each week will be hosted at a different community garden in the Youngstown area. Participants should bring a note pad and a lawn chair for seating, as well as their gardening questions. Drama camp - “The Pied Piper of Hamelin”
Join the Canfield library for its fourth annual drama camp. Learn about the many aspects of theater, including auditions, the casting process, stage directions and more. The children will present “The Pied Piper of Hamelin” for family and friends, and refreshments will be served on the last day of camp, June 22 at 3 p.m. Camp runs from 10 a.m. until noon on June 18-21 and 1-3 p.m. on June 22. Tales of King Arthur
Be swept away by tales of gallant knights in shining armor, elegant ladies in medieval castles and the court of Camelot as high school actors perform Arthurian Legends on June 25 at 10 a.m. at the Canfield library. This event is for school-age children, tweens and teens.
Pet rocks rock
If you are ready for a pet that doesn’t scratch, bark or bite and never gets hungry, select your perfect match at the PLYMC Pet Rock Adoption Agency on June 12 at 2:30 p.m. at the Canfield library. Children ages 2-7 may select their pet, measure and weigh it, then give it a name. Give it a bit of exercise and fun by building with Legos/Duplos, then put it in an individualized box with a blanket to nap after reading a story. This event is for children of all ages.
Tales to tails
Read to the Canfield library’s favorite therapy dogs on June 11 at 6 p.m. This helps develop reading skills, promotes confidence and encourages a love of reading. Bring a book of your choice or the librarians find one for you. This event is for children in grades kindergarten and up. Therapy dogs are provided by Pawz for People, a Community Partner of Pet Partners, a local Pet Therapy group.
Those “Stranger Things” rock
Join the Canfield library this summer to celebrate all things strange, and “Stranger Things.” This event will take place on June 14 at 6 p.m. There will be various activities including upside down art, missing friend searches, grabbing a bite at our loaded waffle bar, and of course rocking out to some fabulous tunes from the 80’s. Feel free to dress as your favorite character. This event is for teens ages 13 and up.
Zentangle
Have fun and create unique art at the Canfield library’s Zentangle program on June 18 at 6:30 p.m. Learn what Zentangle is and how it benefits the mind and body. Mah-Jongg for beginners

Hydrangea school
Join Eric Barrett, OSU Extension Educator, to learn all about the world of hydrangeas. Discover which varieties will work best in your garden and landscape, and learn how to properly care for and maintain a successful bed of hydrangeas. At the workshop, you will receive a reference chart and your very own hydrangea to take home. MCCTC students open greenhouse for spring plant sale
The Spring Plant Sale, sponsored by the Floral Design and Landscaping program at the Mahoning County Career and Technical Center, has started selling their plants. Students in the program have prepared items including assorted annuals, hanging baskets and patio planters. Flats of flowers will also be available. The Horticulture Greenhouse will be open to the public from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m., Monday through Friday, throughout the month of May until all items are sold. Register for Summer Discovery beginning on May 1
Visit a Mahoning County public library or sign up online on or after May 1 to register for this year’s Summer Discovery Program. This year’s theme is “Libraries Rock!” It will run from May 1 until July 31. Sign up and receive a coupon and Mahoning Valley Scrappers ticket voucher. Children who complete the program have the chance to have breakfast with Marc Brown, author/illustrator of the “Arthur” series. Children can complete activities or read books to earn prizes (while supplies last) and to earn a chance to win a gift card. Children who complete the program by July 22 will be invited to a breakfast event on July 27, sponsored by Sweeney Chevy Buick GMC. Teens and adults can also participate in Summer Discovery by reading books to earn prizes and earn a chance to win a gift card.
Strawberry 5K and Fun Run to benefit food bank
On June 9, Molnar Farms is hosting an inaugural Strawberry 5K and Fun Run through the farm grounds, located at 3115 E. Western Reserve Road in Poland. Proceeds after expenses and all food donations will benefit Second Harvest Food Bank. The cost for the 5K is $35. The Fun Run is $10. The 5K begins at 9 a.m. and the Fun Run begins at 10:30 a.m. Runners that sign up for the 5K before May 21 will receive a free race T-shirt. Guided labyrinth walk season begins at The Ursuline Health and Wellness Center
The Ursuline Health and Wellness Center, located at 4280 Shields Road, begins its 2018 Guided Labyrinth Walk season with a walk on April 15 at 2 p.m. This year’s themes celebrate aspects of St. Angela Merici’s introduction to her Counsels. St. Angela founded the Ursuline order in 1535. All persons of faith are invited to participate in these free events. Walks generally take 20 minutes to half an hour. All walks are scheduled weather-permitting. The list of walks is: June 21 at 6:30 p.m. - “Be Confident,” July 19 at 6:30 p.m. - “Risk New Things,” Aug. 16 at 6:30 p.m. - “Stick with It,” Sept. 20 at 6:30 p.m. - “Get on Your Knees” and Oct. 14 at 2 p.m. - “Expect Big Surprises.” The Ursuline Center Labyrinth is a ministry of the Ursuline Sisters of Youngstown and open year-round from dawn to dusk for all persons of faith. There is no cost to use the labyrinth, which is handicapped-accessible and offers ample parking. Printed guides are provided at the Labyrinth’s entrance giving suggestions for following the path, but there is no right or wrong way to experience the sacred walk.

Pink Ribbon Golf Classic to be in July
The annual Pink Ribbon Golf Classic will take place at Avalon Lakes Golf and Country Club on July 16. All proceeds from this event will go directly to the American Cancer Society. The Mahoning Valley Corvettes joins in with Salem car cruise for event
The call to take over The Salem Super cruise, Salem’s largest annual event attracting thousands, was recently answered by The Mahoning Valley Corvettes. The non-profit car club dates back to 1962 including members from every surrounding community and Salem. Many of the club members have enjoyed the Salem Super Cruise and will now partner with the City of Salem to put on the event entering its 14th year. The Salem Super Cruise is open to all cars and trucks, not just Corvettes. Motorcycles are also welcome. The weekend benefits the Second Harvest Foodbank, which feeds many hungry local families. The event will take place June 7-10 and will feature activities, some free, including a parade, car show, food, live bands and more. The Mahoning Valley Corvettes look forward to partnering with the City of Salem to provide a this weekend for the entire family.

Overeaters Anonymous is offering meetings at several local locations and on a variety of days. GA to meet twice this week
Gamblers Anonymous, a 12-Step fellowship of compulsive gamblers who want to recover from their gambling addictions, will meet twice this week in the Youngstown-Warren area. A GA meeting is offered every Friday at Westminster Church, located at 119 Stadium Drive in Boardman, and another is offered every Sunday at Christ Church Presbyterian, located at 3425 Hopkins Road in Youngstown (in Cornersburg). Both meetings begin promptly at 7:30 p.m. and last about 1-1/2 hours. Those who believe gambling has affected any part of their lives are urged to attend.
