District announces open enrollment

Austintown

The Austintown Local School district will offer statewide open enrollment for the 2018-19 school year. Applications will be accepted for students in kindergarten to eighth grade based on grade level availability. Applications are available at www.austintownschools.org.

In order to be accepted, completed applications must be submitted online. Incomplete applications will not be considered. One application must be completed for each student.

No new students will be accepted in grades 9 to 12. Only existing open-enrollment students and those in special programs will be accepted into the high school. Enrollment will close Aug. 3. Call the registration office at at 330-797-3900, ext. 1516 with questions.

Nursing conference to take place April 6

ALLIANCE

The Inter-Science Research Club at the University of Mount Union will host a conference, “Internal Conflict: Our Current Understanding of Autoimmune Disease,” from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. April 6 for nurses seeking continuing education. Discussions will be led by Keith Miller, Ph.D., assistant professor of chemistry and biochemistry at Mount Union; Dr. Joe Rettig, emergency physician in Salem; Michael Henderson, Ph.D.; and Lonnie Lowery, Ph.D., R.D., L.D., associate professor of exercise science at Mount Union.

Cost is $35 and includes lunch at the Kresge Dining Commons. Reservations must be submitted to Andrea Williams at 330-823-3672 or williaal@mountunion.edu. Payment will be collected on site during registration from 8 to 9 a.m. in Cope Music Hall (Presser Recital Hall).

Boardman Lions to award scholarships

BOARDMAN

The Boardman Lions Club will award two $1,000 scholarships in the spring to two graduating seniors who are residents of Boardman and will be attending a four-year college to pursue a bachelor’s degree.

Additional requirements include a minimum grade point average of 3.0, 30 hours of community service per year from sophomore year on, two recommendations and a personal essay.

Any graduating senior who lives in Boardman will be considered regardless of high school. Scholarships will be selected by the scholarship committee based on academic success, volunteer service, and recommendations. Awards will be announced at the time of graduation. Choffin waves fee for some programs

Choffin Career and Technical Center is waiving its $25 application fee for the three adult education programs; practical nursing, surgical technology and dental assisting. Teacher of the month

EAST PALESTINE

The Ohio Lottery recently honored Jennifer Mollenkopf as a Teacher of the Month for the Ohio Lottery. She is a band/choir/drama teacher at East Palestine Middle School.
