1993: The Youngstown Board of Education votes 5-2 to delay action on a recommendation by Superintendent Alfred Tutela that South High School be closed.

In one of the largest medical malpractice verdicts in Mahoning County, a jury awards $1 million to Darce Burkley, 63, a former manager of State Auto Insurance Co.’s Youngstown office, who lost his voice during surgery at Southside Medical Center.

Two Packard Electric Co. employees, Richard Schley and Randy Vlad, ask the Trumbull County Board of Health to regulate smoking in work places, saying the company is not protecting the health of nonsmokers.

1978: The Youngstown Police Strike Force raids a Franklin Avenue home that was operating as a bottle club, confiscating a substantial amount of liquor and beer and arresting 17 people.

Eight Democrats file for the nomination for Trumbull County Commissioner: Joseph Long, Ted Vanelli, Richard L. Smith, Sam P. Vivelo, James Chidester, Robert Leonard, James B. Hagan and William F. Ogleton Jr. The winner will face incumbent Republican Anthony R. Bernard.
