UPDATE | Niles mayor retires, council president to serve as acting mayor

NILES — Mayor Thomas Scarnecchia announced his retirement today in a letter given to city council and read at a news conference in City Hall.

Council president Barry Steffey Jr. will serve as acting mayor. It will be up to the Democratic Party's precinct committee to select a person to serve as interim mayor for the remaining 18 months of Scarnecchia's term.

Scarnecchia had served nearly 2 1/2 years as mayor.
