Austintown Elementary School hosted an art show for the second-grade students at the school on May 9.
Art teachers Lauren Sheridan and Andra LaMarca decided to showcase the artwork as a farewell to the students and to promote the arts, as the second grade is the ending grade in the school since the intermediate school houses the third grade students.
“Austintown supports the arts from the bottom up,” said LaMarca. The exhibit was their way of supporting the students’ creative and artistic sides.
They had at least one piece from every student in the second grade, totalling near 750 pieces. They set up the projects by classroom, so many of the same pieces of art were near each other. They had a discussion question near each set of projects. They also had a photo area for the parents to take pictures of their children.
The show took place in the gymnasium, which was filled tight with attendees. Sheridan said she was pleased with the “awesome turn out” and said that it is great seeing parents support the students.
Each student in the school has art once a week throughout the full school year. The teachers try to expose the students to various types of art.
