Canfield, Austintown win state games
TALLMADGE
Canfield and Austintown are the only Little League Softball 9-10 teams undefeated at the state tournament.
Sunday, Canfield defeated Portsmouth, 3-2, while Austintown defeated Tallmadge, 8-3. They will play each other tonight, with the winner advancing to the championship game.
For Canfield, Kyleigh Gordon tossed a one-hitter. Marina Koenig scored the winning run on a passed ball while Sofia Castronova hit a two-run single.
In the other games, Austintown scored three runs in the first inning.
Kali Ray tossed a four-hitter and contributed three hits. Sam Severn and Kylie Folkwein each had two hits including doubles. Morgan Roby and Liz Spalding each had a hit.
Saturday, Canfield defeated Elyria, 15-0, while Austintown defeated Payo, 11-1.
In the Little League Baseball 9-10 state tournament, Boardman lost to Loveland, 6-5, to fall into the losers bracket. Tonight, Boardman plays New Albany.
In the Little League Baseball 10-11 state tournament in Ironton, Canfield defeated Tuscarawas, 9-4. Canfield’s next game is Tuesday.
Poland-Canfield win World Series game
KIRKLAND, WASH.
Poland-Canfield rolled to an 11-1 victory over Canada's Ponoka team in the Junior League World Series.
Details of the game were not reported.
Scrappers power past Ironbirds
ABERDEEN, MD.
Tyler Freeman and Hosea Nelson homered as the Mahoning Valley Scrappers earned series win number 11 on Sunday at Ripken Stadium with a 5-1 victory over the Aberdeen Ironbirds.
Freeman homered in the fourth inning for a 1-0 lead. An inning later, Clark Scolamiero and scored on Tre Gantt's sacrifice fly.
Nelson's two-run homer highlighted the Scrappers' three-run eighth inning.
Adam Scott (2-0) earned the win in 2.1 innings of relief of Alex Royalty. Scott allowed an earned run on one hit. He walked one and struck out two.
The Scrappers (26-14) open a three-game series against the Williamsport Crosscutters tonight at Eastwood Field in Niles.
Kings, Gordon win at Sharon Speedway
HARTFORD
Rex King Jr., Andrew Gordon abd Josh Deems were winners on Saturday at Sharon Speedway.
King won the Hovis Auto & Truck Supply Big-Block Modifieds while Gordon finished first in the Penn-Ohio Championship Series for the Gibson Insurance Agency Stock Cars.
Deems won the HTMA/Precise Racing Products RUSH Sportsman Modifieds while Ty Rhoades was first in the Summit Racing Equipment Econo Mods.
Wales' Thomas wins Tour de France

Geraint Thomas won his first Tour de France title on Sunday, concluding his transformation from a support rider into a champion of cycling's biggest race.
The Welsh rider with Team Sky successfully defended his lead of 1 minute, 51 seconds over second-placed Tom Dumoulin in the mostly ceremonial final stage around the Champs-Elysees on Sunday.
Johnson wins Canadian tourney
OAKVILLE, Ontario
Top-ranked Dustin Johnson pulled away Sunday in the RBC Canadian Open for his third victory of the season and 19th on the PGA Tour.
Tied for third-round lead with Kevin Tway, Byeong Hun An and Whee Kim, Johnson shot a 6-under 66 for a three-stroke victory over Kim and An. Johnson finished at 23-under 265, winning at Glen Abbey after finishing second in 2013 and 2016.
Kim and An each shot 69 in the round interrupted by a nearly 2-hour lightning delay.
Keegan Bradley had a 64 to finish fourth at 19 under.
