McKinney hearing

The first hearing in Sean McKinney’s election-fraud lawsuit has been moved to 10 a.m. Thursday in Mahoning County Common Pleas Court. Visiting Judge Patricia A. Cosgrove will preside over the hearing. McKinney filed the suit in December, alleging widespread voter fraud in November’s mayoral election, which he lost to Mayor Jamael Tito Brown.
Endorsing DeWine

Mahoning County Republican Party executive committee Tuesday endorsed the Mike DeWine/Jon Husted ticket for governor.
Mahoning County joins Belmont, Columbiana, Franklin, Highland, Holmes, Lucas, Morgan, Perry, Pike, Scioto and Summit counties in endorsing DeWine.
Man cited in OVI case

Township police cited an Austintown man for operating a vehicle while impaired after responding to an accident with injuries Sunday night. Police were sent to an accident near Walker Mill Road and Bishop Woods Court about 8:30 p.m. Police reported seeing a car against a tree, and emergency medical workers removed two people trapped inside.
According to the report, officers smelled “a strong odor of an alcoholic beverage” coming from the car’s interior. Police said the driver admitted to consuming alcohol and thought he was still at a nearby bar/grill establishment. After being treated at an emergency room, Benjamin Cavicchi, 22, of Canfield-Niles Road was cited for OVI and failure to maintain reasonable control.
‘Jewels of Winter’

Library branch to open

In what the Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County has called a “Valentine’s Day gift to the community,” the new Michael Kusalaba branch at 2815 Mahoning Ave. will open at 10 a.m. Feb. 14. The library will be open from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday and Saturday. A formal dedication will take place Feb. 24.
Donation to food bank

Second Harvest Food Bank of the Mahoning Valley will receive $7,500 at 1 p.m. Thursday thanks to a promotional program, Families Helping Families, from Giant Eagle and the Philadelphia-based premium deli meat and cheese company Dietz & Watson.
The presentation is at the Giant Eagle Supermarket, 48 Vienna Ave., Niles. Checks for $7,500 were also presented to food banks in Columbus, Akron, Cleveland in Ohio and Pittsburgh and Erie in Pennsylvania.
Families Helping Families is a national Dietz & Watson charitable purchase program run in conjunction with partner supermarkets that encourage consumers to purchase Dietz & Watson products to support a local charity or organization.

YWCA Youngstown, 25 Rayen Ave., is offering free income-tax filing assistance by appointment only Saturdays from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. beginning Feb. 3 and 6 to 9 p.m. Wednesdays through April 14. For an appointment, call 330-540-1947. Also available is a self-serve link on the YWCA website at ywca.org/youngstown.
To be eligible to file through the YWCA program, participants must have a household income under $65,000 if single and $95,000 if married. Also needed are the user’s Social Security number, W2, 1099 and 1098 forms and information about other income, deduction and credit information, such as child-care expenses, tuition, bills and union dues, and a copy of last year’s tax return, if possible.

YWCA Youngstown has received a $1,762 grant from the Helen and Walter Bender Memorial Fund. The funds will be used to further YWCA’s mission of eliminating racism and empowering women.
YWCA Youngstown has been part of the community for more than 113 years. Programs focus on empowerment, youth development and housing with supportive services.
