1948: Indian political and spiritual leader Mohandas K. Gandhi, 78, is shot and killed in New Delhi by Nathuram Godse, a Hindu extremist.
1968: The Tet Offensive begins during the Vietnam War as Communist forces launch surprise attacks against South Vietnamese towns and cities; although the Communists would be beaten back, the offensive was seen as a major setback for the U.S. and its allies.
1969: The Beatles stage an impromptu concert atop Apple headquarters in London; it would be the group’s last public performance.
2008: John Edwards bows out of the race for the Democratic presidential nomination. Rudy Giuliani dropped out of the Republican presidential contest and endorsed front-runner and longtime friend John McCain.

1993: With jobless rates of 12.5 percent, Youngstown and Warren had the highest unemployment rates in Ohio in December.
Commercial Intertech Corp., which has headquarters in Youngstown, says it has reached an agreement to manufacture its prefabricated buildings in South Korea through a licensing agreement with Geoyang Development Co. Ltd.
A 16-year-old Youngstown youth is sentenced to 10 to 28 years in a state prison after admitting involvement in three drug-related shootings that left one man dead and another wounded.
1978: Youngstown police responding to neighbors’ concerns find the frozen body of Alice Hicks, 77, in her home at 121 Webb St. The door to her house was ajar on a day that temperatures were in the single digits, but police do not believe there was foul play.
Ohio Gov. James A. Rhodes asks President Jimmy Carter to intervene in a 55-day strike by coal miners, saying that three Ohio electric companies have coal supplies of less than 50 days.
Standard Oil Co. of Ohio ends its transition from a midsize energy and chemical company to a leading domestic crude-oil producer with its first $1 billion revenue quarter.
1968: A suspected dope peddler with $1,500 worth of heroin in his suitcase breaks away from three Youngstown policemen at the downtown Greyhound bus station. He escapes, but police believe he is wounded by shots fired by one of the officers.
Navy Lt. James Blaine Connaughton, 26, of North Lima, is killed when his TAF-9J Cougar jet airplane crashes near Chase Field in Texas.
A hapless bandit holds up Canale’s Pharmacy on McGuffey Road. The man had clerk Pat Panny and owner Mrs. Agnes Canale lie on the floor. Betty Soka, the pharmacist, noticing the gun was a toy, knocked him down. The bandit escaped.
1943: Merchant and former Youngstown Mayor George Oles says he will “fight till hell freezes over” against charges by the Office of Price Administration that his downtown market violated price ceilings.
Three Youngstowners will go over pictures in the annual Youngstown International Photographic salon at Butler Art Institute to see how pictures appeal to people not particularly interested in photography. What they like will be compared with that of the professional judges.
The city police vice squad, led by Sgt. William Davis, state liquor investigators and patrolmen raid the A.A. Social Club on Rayen Avenue, surprising 40 people at card and dice tables.
