In the spirit of the holidays, members of the Canfield High School art club had a coloring book and crayon drive to benefit Akron Children’s Hospital Mahoning Valley.
The club collected the items from Dec. 1-19, with a representative from the hospital visiting the school to pick up the donations on Dec. 21.
The art club, under advisor and CHS art teacher Kate Antal, opened the donation drive up to all students at the school as well, with a goal of collecting 100 coloring books. The club easily surpassed their goal by collecting 181 coloring books and 181 boxes of crayons.
“This is our members’ way of giving back to the community. The club likes to choose different local groups each year to help, and this year we decided on Akron Children’s Hospital. Last year, we chose Sojourner’s House,” Antal said.
Antal said she is very proud of the students’ generosity.
“We have received a great response to our coloring book and crayons drive. Students are bringing in four or five sets at a time. I am very proud of the generosity of our students and we know the kids at Akron Children’s Hospital will enjoy the books and crayons. This is the second year for the Art Club, which is donation-based and receives no funds, so it is so nice to see the support we have received from the students and teachers with our drive,” Antal said.
Canfield High School senior and art club member India Thakar took the reigns in promoting the drive on social media as part of a service project.
“I thought I could promote the drive on social media, like Instagram, because that’s where students get a lot of their information. I’m also spreading the word around school by talking about the drive and putting up posters. I knew I wanted to help make the Art Club’s coloring book and crayon drive a success for Akron Children’s Hospital,” Thakar said.
Antal coordinated the coloring book and crayon drive with JoAnn Stock, senior director of development at Akron Children’s Hospital Mahoning Valley.
Sarah Podolan, Akron Children’s Hospital Mahoning Valley development assistant, visited the school to pick up the coloring books and crayons.
”We are very grateful for this donation from the Canfield High School Art Club. We really appreciate the community’s support and it’s so great to see young people giving back. It’s amazing,” Podolan said.
