1993: U.S. Rep. James A Traficant Jr. is urging Trumbull County residents not to sign petitions for a referendum on a sales tax imposed for a proposed Pentagon accounting center, saying the vote would “kill” the project.
Acting on an anonymous tip, Trumbull County deputies raid Candlelite Knolls, a recreational hall owned by the Cortland Optimist Club, and confiscate five slot machines, several blackjack tables, a roulette machine and an electronic card machine.
Mahoning County commissioners put a temporary hold on entering into any long-term contracts for a new county jail until two new commissioners, Frank Lordi and David Engler, can re-evaluate the cost and financing.
1978: The Youngstown Civil Service Commission orders the reinstatement of Patrolman Ernest Paul Sr., who resigned under pressure nine days after he was sentenced to county jail on an assault charge. Paul had run his patrol car into four patrolmen who were picketing the entrance to the police garage.
Traffic is temporarily reduced to one way heading west on Federal Plaza as work begins on the $1.2 million expansion project in downtown Youngstown.
Brookfield school teachers end their four-day strike, but the schools remained closed for another day because of stormy weather.
1968: The Rev. Thomas E. McCarthy is appointed director of Catholic Charities for the Diocese of Youngstown. He holds a master’s degree in social work from Catholic University in Washington.
Dr. Norman Yoder, a psychiatrist at a Pennsylvania hospital, was so concerned over the illegal use of LSD by children that he invented a story that the sun blinded six college students who stared at it after taking the drug.
1943: Major and Mrs. A.E. Avery, commanding officers of the Youngstown Salvation Army for six years, have been advanced to the leadership of the Brooklyn, N.Y., Salvation Army.
