Kempe to serve as assistant at Niles

NILES

Former Ursuline head coach Larry Kempe has been named the defensive coordinator at Niles, the coach told the Vindicator Saturday night.

Kempe’s contract was not renewed after going 1-9 with the Irish this past fall. He was 34-46 in his seven seasons in charge.

He returns to the school where he taught for 33 years before retiring from teaching in 2009. He also had a stint as the Red Dragons’ defensive coordinator.

Browns’ Collins, Callaway fined

NEW YORK

Three of the NFL’s best defensive players, Bobby Wagner, Jadeveon Clowney and Chandler Jones, have been fined $20,054 each by the league for hits in last week’s games.

Clowney and Chandler were docked for roughing-the-passer calls, while Wagner was penalized for a facemask penalty.

Those were not the largest fines announced by the league Saturday.

Seattle cornerback Justin Coleman’s unnecessary roughness penalty against San Francisco cost him $26,739. Also fined that amount was Cleveland linebacker Jamie Collins for the same call.

New Orleans rookie DE Marcus Davenport was fined $20,054 for roughing the passer against Carolina.

Docked $10,026 for unnecessary roughness were Ravens cornerback Jimmy Smith and running back Kenneth Dixon; Broncos cornerback Jamar Taylor; Browns receiver Antonio Callaway; Rams cornerback Marcus Peters; and Panthers guard Andrus Peat.

On Friday, Panthers safety Eric Reid said he was fined a fourth time this season by the NFL for an illegal hit — this time one that didn’t draw a flag — in the loss to the Saints. He was fined $20,054.

Crystal Palace stuns Manchester City

MANCHESTER, England

Crystal Palace put three goals past defending champion Manchester City, including a stunning strike by Andros Townsend, to win 3-2 on Saturday in the biggest upset of the English Premier League so far.

City fell four points behind leader Liverpool with one round to go before the midway stage of the campaign.

Palace hadn’t won a league game at City since 1990 and went behind to a header from Ilkay Gundogan in the 27th minute.

Jeffrey Schlupp equalized for the visitors in the 33rd before a magnificent long-range dipping shot from Townsend into the top-right corner put Palace ahead two minutes later.

Luka Milivojevic converted a penalty in the 51st after a foul by Kyle Walker on Max Meyer as Palace led 3-1.

Palace had a nervous finish after City substitute Kevin De Bruyne made it 3-2 in the 85th with an apparent cross which goalkeeper Vicente Guaita couldn’t keep out. Gabriel Jesus headed over the bar as City went close to grabbing a point but Roy Hodgson’s team successfully held out.

Towson player scores on own basket in loss

ATLANTIC CITY, N.J.

Pookie Powell scored 18 points and La Salle capitalized on 19 turnovers to best Towson, 57-51 and win the Battle of the Boardwalk tournament in Atlantic City, New Jersey on Saturday afternoon.

The game included an embarrassing first-half moment when Towson freshman Solomon Uyaelunmo took an in-bounds pass, turned and scored on his own basket while his coach, Pat Skerry nearly keeled over in disbelief.

It took first-year La Salle coach Ashley Howard 11 games to get his first career win and now his Explorers have won two straight.

La Salle (2-11) led most of the way, taking a 27-23 advantage at intermission, but Towson hung around while the Explorers shot just 22.2 percent from the field in the second half. La Salle was 18 of 22 from the line. Towson shot 41.2 percent from the field (21 of 51), but was just 1 of 10 from distance and 8 of 11 from the line.
