Pa. state police say son set home ablaze, killing 92-year-old father

GREENSBURG, Pa. (AP) — State police say a Pennsylvania man set his home ablaze, killing his 92-year-old father inside.

Sgt. Christopher Terrana tells the Tribune-Review the fire was reported shortly before 9:30 p.m. Thursday in Hempfield Township, about 30 miles east of Pittsburgh.

The victim was identified as Frank Novak.

According to an affidavit, a neighbor who’s a firefighter ran to the home and when he pounded on the door, he saw a man inside standing near a burning staircase.

The neighbor provided a description of the man to police that matched Novak’s son, 40-year-old Douglas Novak.

Early today, the suspect was located. According to the complaint, he told police he intentionally lit the fires and fled as firefighters arrived.

He’s been charged with arson and related offenses. No attorney information is available.
