1963: More than 200,000 people listen as the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. delivers his “I Have a Dream” speech in front of the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, D.C.
1968: Police and anti-war demonstrators clash in the streets of Chicago as the Democratic National Convention nominates Hubert H. Humphrey for president.

General Motors intends to sell sports-car maker Group Lotus and Lotus Cars USA to Italy’s Bugatti International. GM bought Lotus in 1986 for $32 million.
A fact-finder recommends that Trumbull County Sheriff’s Department deputies get immediate pay increases of 13 percent – more than what the county was offering, but about half what the deputies’ union sought.
1978: Youngstown Bishop James Malone says he was surprised by the College of Cardinals’ selection of Albino Luciano of Venice, a cardinal virtually unknown in the United States and much of the world, as the new pontiff, Pope John Paul I.

1968: Youngstown delegates to the Democratic National Convention in Chicago had a bird’s eye view of the demonstration of Vietnam peace advocates across from the Conrad Hilton Hotel. The demonstration kept Chicago police busy all night.
Dr. James A. Reeder, a group leader for the British Columbia Research Council, is appointed an instructor in chemistry at Youngstown State University.
One workman, Peter Ceymour, died and another, Robert Lewis, was seriously injured when a section of the old Sirbu building at South Avenue and Front Street collapsed during demolition.
1943: Twenty-two service stars hang along a block- long section of Rose Street in Youngstown on which only 32 families are living. The men are serving in various branches of the service all over the world.
