Infielders lead Scrappers over Crosscutters

Infielders Jose Fermin and Tyler Freeman recorded back-to-back RBI hits in the top of the third inning to help give the Mahoning Valley Scrappers a 4-1 win over the Williamsport Crosscutters on Monday night.

With the Scrappers down 1-0, Fermin tied the game with an RBI triple and Freeman followed with an RBI single to right field.

Fermin finished the night 3 for 5 with an RBI and two runs scored. Freeman went 2 for 4 with an RBI.

The Scrappers (38-30) pushed the lead to 4-1 on Simeon Lucas’ two-run single in the top of the eighth.

The Crosscutters (29-40) jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first on Alec Bohm’s RBI single to center field.

Scrappers starter Juan Mota earned his first win since he beat the Crosscutters in Williamsport on Aug. 10. Mota allowed one run on four hits in five innings. He struck out a season-high seven batters and didn’t allow a walk.

Luis Valdez and Erick Algarin come on in relief for the Scrappers. Both pitchers threw two hitless innings. Valdez struck out four and walked one while Algarin struck out two. Valdez recorded his fifth hold and Algarin earned his seventh save.

Williamsport starter Francisco Morales took the loss. He allowed two runs on four hits and two walks. He struck out five in 42/3 innings of work.

The Scrappers and the Crosscutters will play tonight for the final time this season. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
