YOUNGSTOWN
A new entertainment series, sponsored by the Cliffe College of Creative Arts and Communication at Youngstown State University, will make its debut this month.
The Donald P. Pipino Performing Arts Series includes seven events ranging from classical music to puppetry to audio theater. It will begin Aug. 31 with a performance by the Huber Marionettes.
“The Pipino Performing Arts Series ...highlights the vibrant campus and community life of YSU and our region,” said Phyllis M. Paul, dean of the Cliffe College. “It brings to Youngstown the types of cultural opportunities usually found only in large metropolitan areas and includes performances by nationally and internationally renowned artists” as well as YSU theater, dance and music students.

Most events will take place at Ford Family Recital Hall at the DeYor Performing Arts Center, 260 W. Federal St., downtown. Two events, including the first one, will take place in Ford Theater, which is on the lower level of Bliss Hall, on the YSU campus.

The Huber Marionettes, Aug. 31 at 7:30 p.m. in Ford Theater.
Phillip Huber is the man behind the marionettes, pulling the strings. During performance, the audience is aware of him in the shadows, perhaps with a dim colored light on his face. But below, his marionettes are alive with feelings, passions and personality.
His show, “Suspended Animation,” is a series of vignettes selected from the Huber Marionettes characters cast. It features dramatic lighting, an elegant stage presence and precise timing and choreography.
ACRONYM, Oct. 5 at 7:30 p.m. in Ford Family Recital Hall.
This baroque band will present a concert of music commemorating the Battle of Vienna of 1683, a turning point in the centurieslong conflict between the Ottoman and the Holy Roman empires. ACRONYM’s performance includes dueling choirs of strings and features H.I.F. Biber’s masterpiece Battalia, which depicts the drunken revelry of soldiers, a battle scene, and its tragic aftermath.
“Granny’s Cookies,” Nov. 4 at 2 p.m. in Ford Family Recital Hall.
This live original audio drama by VoiceScapes Audio Theater includes an award-winning cast of master voice artists, including audio actors, directors, sound engineers, writers and producers.
The Harlem Quartet, Jan. 17 at 7:30 p.m. at Ford Family Recital Hall.
This New York-based string quartet advances diversity in classical music with a varied repertoire that includes works by minority composers.
Kate Reid, April 5 at 7:30 p.m. at Ford Family Recital Hall.
This Cuyahoga Falls native will sing songs from The Great American Songbook. Reid appears at jazz venues in the Los Angeles and Miami areas.
“Into the Woods,” April 12 at 7:30 p.m. and April 14 at 2 p.m., at Ford Theater.
As part of its regular theater season, YSU’s theater and dance department will include two of its performances in the Pipino Performing Arts Series.
David Krakauer and Ancestral Groove, April 27 at 8 p.m. at Ford Family Recital Hall.
For more than two decades, world-renowned clarinetist Krakauer and his band has been reinventing and remixing the Jewish music of his ancestry with the sensibility of a contemporary musician informed by funk, jazz and hip-hop.
