Austintown library has expanded their Gotta Move story time, introducing Gotta Move 2.0 for older children.

The original story time, which is one of the libraries most popular events, is for ages 2-5. Gotta Move 2.0 is intended for school-age children.

“This class is less focused on literature, and more focused on physical activity,” said Youth Services librarian Allison Graf who ran the event.

According to Graf the goal of both events is still the same though, to promote literature and activity in children.

“We wanted to involve the older kids who could no longer attend the younger class, but were still looking for a similar program,” Graf said.

She said the idea for the new program came after seeing how many children who were too old for the materials being taught in the younger class still came with younger siblings, and wanted to be involved.

This class is different however, because instead of reading books to the children and doing rhymes and songs, the group did age appropriate exercise videos.

On July 27, the children watched seven different videos where they learned different exercise routines.

The group started with a warm up video, doing stretches to make sure no one got hurt during the event.

“Be ready,” Graf warned, “because it is going to be intense.”

After the warm up children watched a variety of movement songs and other videos and moved with them to get them sweating.

They look multiple water breaks throughout.

At the end of the event the group cooled down by learning a few yoga poses.

The program will have one more event on Aug. 17 according to Graf.

However, because the event is focused on school age children, it will only run in the summer months.
