1920: Ray Chapman of the Cleveland Indians is struck in the head by a pitch thrown by Carl Mays of the New York Yankees. (Chapman died the next morning.)
1948: Baseball legend Babe Ruth dies in New York at age 53.
1956: Adlai E. Stevenson is nominated for president at the Democratic National Convention in Chicago.
1962: The Beatles fire their original drummer, Pete Best, replacing him with Ringo Starr.

1987: One hundred fifty-six people are killed when Northwest Airlines Flight 255 crashes while trying to take off from Detroit; the sole survivor was 4-year-old Cecelia Cichan.
2003: Idi Amin, the former dictator of Uganda, dies in Jiddah, Saudi Arabia; he was believed to have been about 80.
2017: The University of Florida denied a request by white supremacist Richard Spencer to rent space on the campus for a September event. (The university later allowed Spencer to appear in October.)

1993: Ohio Gov. George Voinovich says Ohio is being bled dry by federal mandates, including the Medicaid program that will cost the state $238 million in 1993.
Joseph Wary, 75, of Poland remembers the sinking of the HMS Rohna in the Mediterranean the day before Thanksgiving in 1943, which claimed the lives of 1,050 men, including 131 enlisted men and one officer from Wary’s U.S. Army company.
Youngstown Police Chief Randall Wellington says female undercover officers will be used in a crackdown on prostitution, arresting the men who seek to buy sex.
1978: A 68-year-old Boardman man, Louis Svabic drowns when his canoe capsized in the Morrison Bay area of the Kinzua Dam on the Allegheny River, Pennsylvania State Police report.
Hubbard Township Trustee Ray Kulow says that Trumbull County deputies assigned to patrol the township “beat the hell” out of the township’s cruisers. “They don’t drive their personal cars that way,” Kulow complains.
