Canfield Village Middle School Ambitious Citizens for Empathy Charity Committee members Emily Heino, Anna Kerns, Matthew Logan and A.J. Helmick recently completed a community service project which benefited Angels for Animals.
The fifth- and sixth-graders had a school-wide collection of spare change for three weeks, making it a competition between homeroom classes. The winning homeroom received a prize of cupcakes and juice.
The students collected a total of $500.84 to be donated to Angels for Animals. The four student chose Angels for Animals to receive their donation because they all like animals.
Diane Less, co-founder of Angels for Animals, greeted the students and accepted their donation on March 31.
“Thank you for your good deed. It was so nice of you to choose us, with so many charities out there to choose from. You made a decision to do something, and that’s how animals get the help they need. Thank you,” Less said.
Less asked the students which Angels for Animals program they would like to put their donation toward.
“We can put your donation toward whatever you choose. Our greatest need is our Kitty BOGO Program which offers one price to spay or neuter two cats. We can also use your donation to care for the animals in the building, equipment, medical costs and our pit bull fund. We are also selling square feet in our new Angel Wing building to raise money to build an amazing new facility which will enable us to offer more animal services,” Less said.
After some discussion, Heino, Logan and Helmick decided to purchase two of the one-square-foot blocks in the new Angel Wing building and give the remaining $100 to the Kitty BOGO Program. The two square feet come with naming rights, which will read CVMS 5-6 ACE Charity Committee.
Heino, Logan and Helmick also wanted to thank everyone at Canfield Village Middle School, including all students, parents and teachers, for helping them raise the money for Angels for Animals.
Canfield Village Middle School’s Ambitious Citizens for Empathy (ACE) is administered by Erica Putro, gifted English and Language Arts teacher, and Dominique Tozzi, gifted mathematics teacher. The mission of ACE is to inspire each student to seek valuable ways to contribute to the community and appreciate his or her own role as a citizen within it and to support each student’s social and emotional needs related to giftedness by encouraging a healthy self-concept.
