Austintown library gave a fun opportunity to babies with the Baby Brilliant: Bonding with Babies event on Aug. 15.
Librarian Mallory Wiand led the event. The children and parents sang songs, danced a bit, read books and ended their time with a social and play time. The event teaches babies vocal patterns, identification tools and social abilities, while also staying fun for the children.
The group sang multiple songs throughout the event. The session always starts with a sing-along of “The More We Get Together.“ She grabbed a stuffed monkey and held it in her lap like a baby. She used the monkey to show the parents the movements they should be making with their children. For example, a baby should be clapping during “Come Along and Clap with Me.“ She brought the monkeys hands together to look like it was clapping to demonstrate. The group also sang “Two Little Blackbirds“ and “The Noble Duke of York.“
Wiand also read two books aloud for the babies. The first one, “Zoom,“ helped the children with identifying different vehicles, animals and colors. The second book focused on body part identification, during which the babies pointed to the parts of their body.
The singing and reading ended, so the babies began to play together. Wiand brought out three large containers with toys in them. Many of the toys were foam objects, like balls and other shapes. One of the boxes contained a toy piano and another had stuffed animals for the babies to play with. This part of the event is designed to help the babies be more sociable and play together.
The library hosts Baby Brilliant: Bonding with Babies every Tuesday from 10-11 a.m. The event takes place in their Children’s Activity Room, the room at the end of the children’s area with couches and children’s books.
