Model T birthplace unveils replica of room where car created

DETROIT

The birthplace of the Model T is opening a replica of the secret room where auto industry pioneer Henry Ford developed the iconic vehicle.

The Ford Piquette Avenue Plant museum unveils the new exhibit today at an event to mark the 109th birthday of the Model T. Other special attractions include Model T rides, birthday cupcakes and a car show of early Ford automobiles.

The three-story brick factory in Detroit was where the first of Ford’s Model Ts were built and was the automaker’s home from 1904 to 1910. About 12,000 Model Ts were built there between 1908 and 1910, when production was shifted elsewhere.

Marsalis, Mott Foundation envision education with a beat

FLINT, Mich.

Jazz great Wynton Marsalis is teaming up with the Flint-based Mott Foundation to infuse after-school programs with music and the arts.

The Pulitzer Prize-winning composer and trumpeter will be the honorary co-chairman of a national task force alongside Mott Foundation President Ridgway White. The group of leaders with expertise in the arts and after-school programs will develop content that can be shared nationwide. Mott has granted roughly $350,000 to Jazz at Lincoln Center, of which Marsalis is managing and artistic director.

Marsalis says in a statement the goal is “to take jazz appreciation beyond the band room” and tie it to history, diversity and community engagement.
