REGIONAL SOCCER and VOLLEYBALL TOURNAMENTS AT A GLANCE

GIRLS SOCCER

Division II

Region 5

Cuyahoga Valley Christian Academy (13-5-0) vs. Mentor Lake Catholic (11-0-2) at Twinsburg High School, today, 7 p.m.

Canfield (13-2-4) vs. Richfield Revere (7-12-1) at Ravenna High School, today, 7 p.m.

Regional Final: at TBA, Saturday at TBA

Canfield: The last time the Cardinals advanced to regional was in 2014. The field might play a slight role in the outcome of the game. Ravenna’s stadium has a blue turf, but Canfield head coach Phil Simone said both teams have to play on the same field. Simone said Richfield Revere will wear blue jerseys during the game. He said it might take time in the first half for his players to get adjusted. But he said the players will be composed and won’t let the change impact their play. “One thing that might be interesting is we’ll be the home team on the bracket. We’ll be in white and they’ll be in royal blue, which is the same color as the turf. It will be interesting to see how that plays out. I think it will be more difficult for the fans because of the stands as opposed to us on field level — with the depth perception and all that. It will be interesting to see how that plays out.”

Division III

Region 9

Springfield (17-2-0) vs. Elyria Catholic (14-5-0) at Green High School, today, 7 p.m.

Rootstown (13-5-0) vs. No. 9 Kirtland (12-4-3) at Solon High School, today., 7 p.m.

Regional Final: at TBA, Saturday at TBA

Springfield: This is the Tigers’ first regional trip. They won the district title last Thursday by defeating United, 3-0. Springfield coach Justin Kosek said the team is ready to take the next step. He said having 16 seniors on his roster is “unprecedented” for the area. Kosek add the importance of the seniors arriving when he became the head coach. “I had 16 freshmen four years ago and 16 stuck with it for four years,” Kosek said. “They came in the same year I did, and they learned how to play the way I wanted them to play and they bought into it full-hearted. I think they’re really ready to go tomorrow. We had a couple good practices and I really think they’re ready.” Kosek said the team was focused on the tournament throughout the season.

“Kind of all year, we didn’t have a league this year,” Kosek said. “If we wanted to win something we had to win Districts, we had to win Regionals, we had to win State in order to get a trophy for something.” Kosek said the District win was important for the program.
