Aviation director discusses airport options at WRPA meeting

Wednesday, October 25, 2017

VIENNA — The Western Reserve Port Authority's Aviation Director Dan Dickten gave a report to the board today on the Volaire Aviation Air Service Development Forum.

At the forum, Dickten and WRPA Executive Director John Moliterno met with four airlines, including Southern Airways Express, to talk about service opportunities at the Youngstown-Warren Regional Airport.

The Memphis-based company uses 22 nine-passenger Cessna Caravans and employs 90 pilots to fly 30 times per day into Baltimore-Washington International Airport in Baltimore.

"Southern Airways is a small operator but they are in the process of growing," Dickten said.

Allegiant, the only commercial airliner in operation at the Youngstown airport, will leave in January.

Dickten also gave a report on passenger numbers for September and the year so far. In September, the airport lost passengers because Allegiant put its Orlando destination on hiatus, so the airport only had one destination to offer.

The month ended with 3,435 total passengers.
