YOUNGSTOWN

Children at OH WOW! The Roger & Gloria Jones Children’s Center for Science & Technology learned a little about hammers, nails and woodworking skills Saturday afternoon.

Volunteer Austin Cline, a Youngstown State University Honors College freshman, said the class aimed to teach the kids how to make and use tools.

“They’re making little hedgehogs with tools, and once done making them with hammers, they get a chance to decorate it and make it fun,” Cline said.

The hedgehogs were made of pieces of wood and nails.

Parent Sandra Hutchens of North Carolina said she enjoys seeing children be active and focus on such a wholesome activity.

“I know kids love their iPads, but seeing them do this is just so rewarding and useful, too,” she said.

Cline echoed Hutchens sentiment.

“It’s really important to teach kids things like this for when they grow up,” he said. “In doing events like this, we kind of instill this in them for life by hammering it into their minds.”
