In the final hurrah for the Boardman High School boys golf team, the Spartans are tied for fourth place in the Division I state tournament.

The Spartans shot 318 on Friday at Ohio State University’s Scarlet Course to tie Lakota East.

“We could have played better, so we’re kind of disappointed,” said senior Brian Terlesky, who is capping his stellar varsity career with his fourth trip to state.

Dublin Jerome aced the course, shooting 295 for a 13-stroke lead over Powell Olentangy Liberty and 17-stroke edge on Green.

Terlesky, who shot an 80 to tie for 27th, said course conditions aren’t a surprise.

“We expected firm greens,” Terlesky said. “They are tough, glass-like, they’re so fast. We struggled with our putting.”

Dublin Jerome’s Blake Solomon and Jackson Chandler lead the pack with 71 and 72.

Junior Cole Christman tied for 12th overall by shooting a four-over-par 76. Senior Cade Kreps shot 80 to tie Terlesky. Senior Bryan Kordupel shot an 82 and senior Bobby Jonda shot 89.

Christman agreed the greens are speedy.

“If you put your ball in the wrong spot, you’re going to have a hard time,” Christman said.

In the Division I girls tournament, Canfield senior Hannah Keffler tied for 31st at OSU’s Gray Course. She shot an 82.

Walnut Hills’ Katie Hallinan leads with a 68. King Mills’ Alex Swayne is second with a 69.

Acknowledging their experience, Christman said there was nothing surprising about the course.

“We more or less knew what to expect,” Christman said.

Christman said his best holes came in the middle of the round.

“I had a rough start, but by the time I began the back nine, I was in a good groove,” Christman said. “Over the past six holes, I fell apart. It was disappointing.”

Still the Spartans are enjoying the experience of one last trip to Columbus,

“Not many get the opportunity to go [more than once] so this is truly special,” Christman said.

Terlesky agreed.

“It’s very fun to come back with the team — it’s a thousand-times better being here with teammates,” Terlesky said. “I wouldn’t trade this experience for anything.”
