Area clergy calls for Day of Prayer on Monday

Friday, October 20, 2017

YOUNGSTOWN — Area clergy have called for Christians throughout the Mahoning Valley to engage a day of prayer and fasting at 7 p.m. Monday at Elizabeth Baptist Church, 1210 Himrod Ave. on the city's East Side.

This call to prayer was prompted by the Rev. Hubert Clardy, who shared a sobering passage of Scripture with minister colleagues days before his sudden and unexpected death last month. The passage, Joel 1:13-15, reads in part, "...Declare a holy fast; call a sacred assembly. Summon the elders and all who live in the land to the house of the Lord your God, and cry out to the Lord."

The conveners are asking Christians throughout the Mahoning Valley to commit to a day of fasting (consistent with their particular tradition) and prayer, repenting of personal and corporate sins. It is the belief that at the core of current regional and national distress is the failure of God's people to live lives consistent with the gospel of Jesus Christ.

A special offering will be received which will assist in the Hurricane Maria relief efforts in Puerto Rico. Conveners are asking all attendees to refrain from engaging in political campaigning for this assembly. No candidates’ or issues’ paraphernalia such as T-shirts, buttons, banners, placards or literature distribution will be permitted.
