1718: English pirate Edward Teach – better known as Blackbeard – is killed in a battle off present-day North Carolina.
1954: The Humane Society of the United States is incorporated as the National Humane Society.
1963: John F. Kennedy, the 35th president of the United States, is assassinated while riding in a motorcade in Dallas. Texas Gov. John B. Connally, in the same car as Kennedy, is seriously wounded. A suspect, Lee Harvey Oswald, is arrested. Vice President Lyndon B. Johnson is sworn in as president.
1977: Regular passenger service between New York and Europe on the supersonic Concorde begins on a trial basis.
1990: British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher announces she will resign.
2007: A man shoots and kills his ex-wife, their three children and himself in a park in Laytonsville, Md.

1992: The pine shoot beetle, which has wreaked havoc on pine trees in Europe and Asia, has shown up in 42 counties in Ohio, Pennsylvania, Michigan, Indiana and New York and will severely limit the shipment of Christmas trees. Mahoning, Trumbull, Ashtabula, Mercer and Lawrence counties are among those under quarantine.
At 39, John Grahovac is the youngest principal in the Youngstown City School District. He oversees South High School, the district’s oldest building.

1967: The parents of Staff Sgt. Richard Lee Scaduto, 20, of New Castle have been notified that their son’s body has been recovered in Vietnam. He was reported missing Aug. 29 along with five other crew members of a helicopter that went down in a storm.
