1718: English pirate Edward Teach – better known as Blackbeard – is killed in a battle off present-day North Carolina.

1954: The Humane Society of the United States is incorporated as the National Humane Society.

1963: John F. Kennedy, the 35th president of the United States, is assassinated while riding in a motorcade in Dallas. Texas Gov. John B. Connally, in the same car as Kennedy, is seriously wounded. A suspect, Lee Harvey Oswald, is arrested. Vice President Lyndon B. Johnson is sworn in as president.

1977: Regular passenger service between New York and Europe on the supersonic Concorde begins on a trial basis.

1990: British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher announces she will resign.

2007: A man shoots and kills his ex-wife, their three children and himself in a park in Laytonsville, Md.

1992: The pine shoot beetle, which has wreaked havoc on pine trees in Europe and Asia, has shown up in 42 counties in Ohio, Pennsylvania, Michigan, Indiana and New York and will severely limit the shipment of Christmas trees. Mahoning, Trumbull, Ashtabula, Mercer and Lawrence counties are among those under quarantine.

At 39, John Grahovac is the youngest principal in the Youngstown City School District. He oversees South High School, the district’s oldest building.

Tom Paolucci rushes for 130 yards and three touchdowns in Warren John F. Kennedy’s 27-2 victory over Akron Manchester in a Region 13 championship game at Reilly Stadium in Salem.

1977: Ten Youngstown school teachers file suit claiming they have been denied their 30-minute lunch period since Sept. 7 at Thorn Hill School, where they teach in a program for children with behavior problems.

Charles Abernathy, general manager of the GM Assembly Division at Lordstown, is confident that production of autos and trucks at the plant will remain strong, providing work for the complex’s 8,000 employees.

Mrs. Mary Sanders, 55, dies in a fire in the bedroom of her home at 709 Fairmont Ave. on Youngstown’s North Side.

1967: The parents of Staff Sgt. Richard Lee Scaduto, 20, of New Castle have been notified that their son’s body has been recovered in Vietnam. He was reported missing Aug. 29 along with five other crew members of a helicopter that went down in a storm.

Ecumenical is the word for Thanksgiving eve and daytime services with more Catholic priests taking part in Protestant services than in any holiday year in memory.

The Senate, after padding a proposed record Social Security increase, faces a vote on a bill that would boost cash payments to 24 million Americans from 15 to 59 percent.

1942: Two Youngstown men are injured in accidents on the second day of hunting season. Arthur Adams, 36, is in fair condition with buckshot wounds of the head, and Thomas Kennedy, 45, shot off his thumb while trying to clear mud from the barrel.

A host of distinguished speakers, including three British consuls, local World War I veterans and William F. Maag Jr., publisher of The Vindicator, are on the program of the British Empire War Veterans at Central YMCA.

Youngstown district steel masters favor replacing the five-day, 40-hour work week for the war’s duration with a 48-hour, six-day week to ease a manpower shortage.
