In celebration of Earth Day, fourth-grade students at C.H. Campbell Elementary School participated in a tree planting ceremony to help Canfield keep its designation as Tree City U.S.A. on April 28.

Mayor Bernie Kosar, Sr. made a dedication proclamation during the planting and Enid Moldonado of the Canfield Parks, Recreation and Cemetery Board attended the ceremony.

The students and their guests gathered in front of the school where a Dawn Redwood tree had been planted and dedicated to the fourth-grade class. The students opened the ceremony by reading a poem, class by class, honoring trees.

“That was beautiful. The tree which has been planted here is a Dawn Redwood. If you come back in 83 years, it will have grown 150 feet in the air, its diameter will be six feet and its circumference will be 19 feet around,” Mayor Kosar told the students.

Mayor Kosar then presented a proclamation to the students and their school.

“I am presenting this proclamation to memorialize what we are doing here today. This proclamation honors the fourth-grade class and C.H. Campbell Elementary School for helping the City of Canfield achieve its 36th year as a Tree City U.S.A and designates April 28 as Tree City Arbor Day. As a Tree City, Canfield pledges to protect, improve and beautify the environment,” Mayor Kosar said.

The fourth-grade students have been studying the importance of trees and their ability to create oxygen, prevent erosion, make food and create habitats for animals.
