“CHIPS,” an R-rated spoof of the 1970s television series about a pair of California

Wednesday, March 22, 2017

“CHIPS,” an R-rated spoof of the 1970s television series about a pair of California Highway Patrol officers, opens in theaters Friday. Here are five facts about the comedy movie, from imdb.com:

v Gunplay: The characters in the trailer and presumably the movie are carrying guns and will fire them. That’s in contrast to the TV show, where they carried guns but never fired them once.

v Original cast: Wilmer Valderrama and Chris Evans were going to portray Ponch and Jon.

v Married: Director-writer Dax Shepard, who also stars in the movie, and cast mate Kristin Bell are married with kids in real life.

v Together again: Bell and cast mate Ryan Hanson worked together on the TV show “Veronica Mars” and the movie of the same name.

v Punch: Jason Ellis is one of the stunt men in the movie who gets punched by Dax. The two were talking about it on Ellis’ satellite radio show. Ellis stated he would be upset if he waited around for hours only to have Dax pull his punches.

“Empire” (9 p.m., Fox): Another clash between mama and papa Lyon? Yes, but this time, they’re really playing for keeps. As the hip-hop drama returns from its lengthy hiatus, Lucious and Cookie dig in for their biggest war yet. With Cookie still reeling in the wake of Lucious’s revelation about her boyfriend, Angelo (Taye Diggs), Lucious announces his new music project and puts Cookie on notice. She, in turn, mounts a project designed to knock him off his throne for good. Let the fireworks commence.
