The Boardman Alumni Association hosted a community night on June 2 at Spartan Stadium to kick off the start of the Boardman Schools 100 Year Celebration.

The year 1918 was the first time that there a class to graduate with a four year accredited diploma and the Alumni Association wanted to do something to honor the 100th year of Boardman Schools.

The Boardman Alumni Association has partnered with businesses around the area to make the event possible. Many of the businesses attended the event and brought their mascot with them.

“Everything is free to all Boardman families,” said Alumni Association President Cheryl Tarantino.

The Alumni Association has been meeting since last summer to organize the event, but for the last seven years the committee has been coming up with plans and ideas to make the 100 year celebration a success.

The event started at 6:30 p.m. and ended around 10 p.m., when the movie “Moana” finished. The evening began with family friend games and activities, followed by a mascot race. There was music from the band shell while families participated in the activities. At around 8:30 p.m., the families got to watch “Moana” on the stadium scoreboard. Families set up chairs and blankets on the football field to find the perfect viewing location.

“We figure you only celebration 100 years once and we want to get everyone involved and we want to make it a free celebration,” said Tarantino.

Tarantino hopes bringing families and children of all ages will let them know they are part of something special. Also being able to see the new stadium will help encourage the community to come out and support the Boardman students throughout their school year.

There are four major celebrations throughout the 2017-18 year, including the community night, celebrating athletics, celebrating arts and music and celebrating academics.
