STRUTHERS
It’s official: The Struthers school district has its new superintendent.
The board of education approved a three-year superintendent contract Thursday for Pete Pirone Jr. He will earn $102,000.
Pirone had been serving as the district’s interim superintendent since January after the resignation of Joseph Nohra.
Nohra originally left the Struthers district to be a chief operating officer for Youngstown City Schools, though he announced his resignation from that position months after accepting it.
Nohra will start work Aug. 1 as the Liberty Local Schools District superintendent.
“We want to continue to provide innovative programs,” Pirone said. “We want our students to be college- and career-ready.”
Pirone, a former principal and assistant superintendent, has been with the Struthers district since 2000.
Also during a special meeting Thursday, the board approved the promotion of Bethany Carlson from principal to lead principal at Struthers Elementary.
Carlson has a three-year contract and will earn $80,621.
The district has hired Joan Jones, formerly an administrator in the Hubbard and Austintown districts, as a Struthers Elementary principal with a three-year contract. Jones will earn $79,114.
Dave Vecchione, formerly an elementary school principal for the McDonald school district, will be the new Struthers Middle School lead principal. Vecchione has a three-year contract and a $87,779 salary.
