GIRARD
City voters will decide this November on a renewal of an existing tax for senior services.
City council voted Monday to place the five-year, 1.8-mill levy on the general-election ballot.
Renewal of the tax, which benefits the Girard Multi-generational Center, would generate $196,759 annually and cost the owner of a $100,000 home $63 per year, according to the Trumbull County Auditor’s Office.
In other business, council agreed to pay $15,000 more to add extra streets to its 2017 paving program. In total, the city will be spending $540,000 from the streets and sidewalks fund to resurface sections of Forsythe Avenue, North Avenue, Morris Avenue, Seneca Drive, Park Avenue, Hickory Trace Drive. Greenwood Avenue, Pawnee Lane, Browns Court and Krehl Avenue. City council has approved a contract with Americon Industrial Services LLC of Youngstown for that project.
A separate street resurfacing project, which has not yet gone out for bid, also will be completed this year. A 2016 grant from the Ohio Public Works Commission for an estimated $164,600 will supplement the city’s projected $275,500 share to pave portions of South Elruth Avenue, North Market Street, Broadway Avenue, Gary Avenue, Cherry Street, South Stewart Avenue, Powers Way, Taylor Avenue, Earl Street, Harry Street, South Market Street and North Elruth Avenue.
Twenty percent of the money the city collects from its speed camera goes to streets and sidewalks.
Additionally, city council OK’d a $68,896 contract with Woodford Excavating Inc. of Leavittsburg for a canoe and kayak launch. The launch, paid for by a Ohio Department of Natural Resources grant, will be constructed this year on a bank of the Mahoning River.
