YSU women sign transfer from Indiana

Josie Fisher, a guard from Fort Wayne, Ind., has signed to continue her basketball and academic future at Youngstown State University, Penguins head coach John Barnes announced.

Fisher is a transfer from Ranger College in Texas, and she played her freshman year at IPFW in the Summit League. The 5-foot-7 Fisher will have two years of eligibility remaining, and she will be permitted to play immediately in 2017-18.

Fisher led IPFW with 54 steals and 96 free throws as a freshman in 2015-16. She was second on the team in scoring at 10.4 points per game, and her .437 field-goal percentage ranked second. Fisher played in 28 of the team’s 31 games, averaging 20.9 minutes and making nine starts. She had some of her best games against Horizon League opponents, averaging 11.8 points, two steals and two assists. She scored at least 20 points four times, including a career-high 28 against Western Illinois.

Tribe puts Brantley on 10-day disabled list

baltimore

The Cleveland Indians have placed outfielder Michael Brantley on the 10-day disabled list with a sprained right ankle.

Brantley injured the ankle earlier this month and aggravated it last week. So, upon returning from the paternity list Monday, he was moved to the DL.

Manager Terry Francona says Brantley hadn’t recovered from the injury sufficiently enough to rejoin the team.

Francona says: “With the 10-day DL, we can give him a chance to get it to where he’s not limping around all year. He just needs a little more time.”

Mayfield pleads guilty to misdemeanors

fayetteville, ark.

A prosecutor says Oklahoma quarterback Baker Mayfield was fined $300 and ordered to pay court costs after accepting a guilty plea to three misdemeanors following his arrest earlier this year in Fayetteville, Arkansas.

Fayetteville City Prosecutor Brian Thomas said Monday that Mayfield accepted a guilty plea last week to public intoxication, fleeing and disorderly conduct. The charges are each punishable by up to 30 days in jail, but Thomas says Mayfield was only fined.

Last week, the Sooners announced internal sanctions against Mayfield, including 35 hours of community service and an alcohol education program. He won’t miss any games.

Supreme Court strikes down mascot ban

washington

The Supreme Court on Monday struck down part of a law that bans offensive trademarks, ruling in favor of an Asian-American rock band called the Slants and giving a major boost to the Washington Redskins in their separate legal fight over the team name.

The justices were unanimous in saying that the 71-year-old trademark law barring disparaging terms infringes free speech rights guaranteed in the Constitution’s First Amendment.

“It offends a bedrock First Amendment principle: Speech may not be banned on the ground that it expresses ideas that offend,” Justice Samuel Alito said in his opinion for the court.

Slants founder Simon Tam tried to trademark the band name in 2011, but the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office denied the request on the ground that it disparages Asians. A federal appeals court in Washington later said the law barring offensive trademarks is unconstitutional and the Supreme Court agreed.
