BOARDMAN

After graduating from the U.S. Naval Academy with numerous awards and distinctions, Ensign Ryan Bailey said he had people from his hometown to thank for his success.

“I wouldn’t be standing up here without all the people in this room,” Bailey, a 2013 Boardman High School graduate, said Wednesday at a township board of trustees meeting at which he was honored. BHS coaches and teachers, as well as Bailey’s family, gathered to hear proclamations in his honor.

Bailey received proclamations from the township, from state Sen. Joe Schiavoni of Boardman, D-33rd, on behalf of the Ohio Senate, and from U.S. Rep. Bill Johnson of Marietta, R-6th.

All noted Bailey’s distinguished tenure at the academy, where he earned a 3.98 GPA, won the Robert E. Crowell Memorial Swimming Trophy, the Coaches-Calvert Award for Men and the U.S. Naval Academy Alumni Association Award. Bailey also was a Distinguished Midshipman member of the academy’s class of 2017.

Bailey leaves Friday to begin nuclear power training for his future career as a submarine officer. He is the son of Jerry and Chris, and has a sister, Brooke, who attends the academy.

“I thank my community for all their support,” he said.

“We want you to know that your community, your country and every veteran is very proud of you. I salute you,” said Leo H. Connelly, Jr., commander of Department of Ohio Disabled American Veterans District 7.

In other business, the board accepted a financing package for the new fire station that is being built at the corner of Market Street and Stadium Drive. The resolution approved Wednesday allows the township to issue permanent improvement bonds to finance the project.

The township will take out a $3 million loan from First National Bank on which it will pay an interest rate of 2.53 percent.

“By the year 2032, we should be completely paid out,” said Fiscal Officer William Leicht.

Fire Chief Mark Pitzer provided an update on the project, saying that walls are going up at the site.

Also, the board approved a resolution to award PS Construction Fabrics Inc. of Wadsworth an $82,539 contract for a new crack-sealing program. Road Superintendent Marilyn Kenner said the program will help preserve the pavement maintained by the township.

The board also approved the purchase of eight new laptop computers for the police department, at a total cost of $21,824. Police Chief Jack Nichols said the department is starting a purchase rotation for its computers.
