1960: Vice President Richard M. Nixon is nominated for president on the first ballot at the Republican national convention in Chicago.

1967: President Lyndon B. Johnson appoints the Kerner Commission to assess the causes of urban rioting, the same day black militant H. Rap Brown called violence “as American as cherry pie.”

1974: The House Judiciary Committee votes 27-11 to adopt the first of three articles of impeachment against President Richard Nixon.

1992: A fire of undetermined origin at 406 Martin St., New Castle, Pa., claims the lives of the infant twin daughters of Willard and Vicki Robertson, Brooke and Britnie.

For the first time in recent history, Youngstown sees a significant decline in serious crime, with the FBI reporting a 17-percent reduction in violent crime during the first six months of the year, compared with the same period a year earlier.

Eleven people are taken to Youngstown’s four hospitals after a Western Reserve Transit bus collides with a funeral limousine at Oak and Lane streets.
