NATIONAL LEAGUE

Giants 2, Pirates 1

SAN FRANCISCO

Brandon Belt doubled in the go-ahead run in the bottom of the seventh inning in support of starter Jeff Samardzija, who threw seven strong innings in the Giants’ victory. Pinch-hitter Miguel Gomez doubled to lead off the seventh for the Giants, who won their second straight and third of five. Denard Span sacrificed him to third and Belt drove a ball to left field that Starling Marte seemed to have trouble finding. It fell in front of him, allowing Gomez to score. Adam Frazier drove in a run for the Pirates, who lost their fourth in five after a six-game winning streak. Samardzija (5-11) allowed a run and four hits, striking out eight and walking two in winning for the first time since July 2.

Diamondbacks 10, Braves 3

PHOENIX

J.D. Martinez homered twice and Ketel Marte hit an inside-the-park two-run homer in the Diamondbacks’ victory. Martinez hit his second and third home runs in the past three days, two of his first three as a Diamondback. It was Martinez’s third multi-home run game of the season, the first two with Detroit. Marte ripped a high drive off the right field corner fence with one out in the bottom of the third inning, and the ball bounced and rolled back toward the infield with Braves outfielder Sean Rodriguez unable to gather it in.

Nationals 8 Brewers 5

WASHINGTON

Ryan Zimmerman and Adam Lind each had two-run doubles in a seven-run eighth inning to help the Nationals rally past the Brewers. Bryce Harper was ejected for arguing with home plate umpire Chris Segal after striking out in the eighth inning with runners on the corners

AMERICAN LEAGUE

Royals 16, Tigers 2

DETROIT

Eric Hosmer matched his career high with five hits, including his first major league grand slam, and the Royals extended their winning streak to a season-high eight games with a rout of the Tigers. Hosmer entered with 117 homers but had not hit one with the bases loaded until he connected off Warwick Saupold in a nine-run seventh inning. Hosmer had six RBIs and scored four runs. Bruce Rondon was ejected with one out in the ninth after hitting Mike Moustakas on the back with a pitch, which caused both benches to empty.

Rays 5, Orioles 1

ST. PETERSBURG, FLA.

Evan Longoria and Steven Souza Jr. homered and Alex Cobb pitched seven strong innings for the Rays. Longoria’s two-run shot off Baltimore starter Ubaldo Jimenez, his 15th of the season, put Tampa Bay up 2-1 in the sixth after a walk to Mallex Smith. Souza’s 21st homer of the season came off reliever Darren O’Day in the seventh.

Blue Jays 3, Athletics 2

TORONTO

Justin Smoak hit a game-tying two-run homer in the ninth inning and Kendrys Morales followed with a game-winning blast as the Blue Jays rallied to beat the struggling Athletics. It was the sixth time this season the Blue Jays have hit conseutive home runs. Smoak and Morales have been involved in each of the past three occasions. Both homers came off A’s closer Santiago Casilla (2-5). Joe Biagini (3-8) worked 2/3 of an inning for the win.

Red Sox 4, Mariners 0

SEATTLE

Chris Sale pitched seven innings of three-hit ball, top prospect Rafael Devers became the youngest Boston player to hit a home run in more than 50 years, and the Red Sox beat the Mariners. Barely 12 hours after the clubs wrapped up a five-hour, 13-inning marathon, the Red Sox got exactly what they needed from their ace to avoid being swept.

INTERLEAGUE

Phillies 9, Astros 0

PHILADELPHIA

Cameron Rupp hit two home runs and had four RBIs and Aaron Nola set a career high with 10 strikeouts over six innings to lead the Phillies. Maikel Franco homered and doubled and Tommy Joseph had two doubles for the Phillies, who had 14 hits while setting season highs with five doubles and nine extra-base hits.

Yankees 9, Reds 5

NEW YORK

Luis Severino dominated over seven innings, Didi Gregorius and Todd Frazier homered, and the Yankees swept a two-game series. The Yankees have won six of eight, inching closer to first-place Boston in the AL East. Severino (7-4) did not allow a runner past second base until the seventh. He struck out nine, eight swinging, many on a devastating slider.
