Body found at truck stop in Austintown

AUSTINTOWN

A San Diego man’s body was found in the cab of his tractor-trailer Tuesday morning at Pilot Travel Center on state Route 46.

The driver’s trucking company called police at 9:38 a.m. after having no contact with the driver since Saturday.

Police told The Vindicator that Austintown was the man’s last stop. Detective Sgt. Jordan Yacavone said there is no indication of suspicious activity. The driver’s body was sent to Mahoning County Coroner’s office to determine the cause of death.

Robbery reported

YOUNGSTOWN

City police were called to Got to Go Towing on East Indianola Avenue at about 2:30 a.m. Tuesday morning for a reported robbery, according to a police report.

A man told police he pulled into the parking lot and then heard a noise coming from the side of the building.

When he went to investigate, he said, someone hit him from behind, knocking him to the ground, and took his wallet. The suspect then fled.

Poland levy renewal

POLAND

The board of education this week approved a resolution allowing it to proceed with putting a levy renewal on the November ballot.

The school district is asking voters to renew for five years an emergency levy that generates $2,297,755 annually. The levy previously represented 6.2 mills but now is down to 6. Voters approved the original levy in 2003.

Woman loses more than $1,200 in scam

A township woman lost more than $1,200 in a scam, according to a police report filed Monday.

The 74-year-old woman told police she received a call from a man who claimed to work for the Mahoning County Sheriff’s Office. He reportedly told her she had failed to appear for jury duty and was in contempt of court.

The man persuaded the woman to purchase prepaid debit cards at a local store and read him the card numbers, which she did. She purchased two $500 cards and one for $247.67, according to the report.

Train engine jumps tracks, leaks fuel

YOUNGSTOWN

A CSX train engine jumped the tracks, but was upright, on Vallourec Star property Tuesday morning. The locomotive’s fuel tank was pierced and has leaked diesel fuel. Girard police were the first to respond. They told The Vindicator the train engine was the only car to come off the tracks.

The Vindicator’s broadcast partner, 21 WFMJ-TV, reported company officials have estimated that 150 gallons of diesel fuel leaked from the engine. Mahoning County and Trumbull County Haz-Mat crews and the Youngstown and Girard fire departments responded.

Haz-Mat crews worked to keep any fuel from entering the Mahoning River.

Officers injured in struggle with suspect

Two township police officers were injured in a struggle with a suspect Sunday morning.

According to a police report, officers were sent to Sylvia Lane in reference to a shirtless man hitting someone’s window and running down the street.

After police located the man, he reportedly tried to flee and then assaulted the officers. Officers tried, unsuccessfully, to use stun guns and batons to subdue him. One of the officers was accidentally shocked by a stun gun, according to the report. Police said the man punched them, wrestled with them and tried to bite them.

Both officers were treated at an area hospital. The man also was treated at a hospital, with charges pending his release.

Man shot in leg

YOUNGSTOWN

Reports said a 27-year-old áleveland man who was shot in the thigh at about 7:20 p.m. Monday on Victor Avenue on the East Side answered every question police asked him with, “I don’t know.”

Officers were called to Northside Medical Center for a report of an assault victim, and when they arrived, all the man would tell them is he was walking on Victor when he heard several gunshots and felt a pain in his thigh. The victim got someone to drive him to the hospital. Police checked the street for any evidence of a shooting but could find nothing, reports said.

Concussion symposium

Mercy Health-Youngstown is hosting “2017 Concussion Symposium: Evolution of Sport-Related Concussion and Where We Are Today” from 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Thursday at McKay Auditorium in Youngstown State University’s Beeghly Hall.

The symposium targets health care professionals involved in the prevention, evaluation/diagnosis and treatment of sport-related concussions.
