3 arraigned in death of Youngstown man

YOUNGSTOWN

Three men accused of killing a man earlier this month were arraigned on aggravated murder charges Tuesday morning.

Alex New, 20, Johnnathen Figueroa, 19, and Fred Nolasco, 23, all of Youngstown, were arraigned on charges of aggravated murder, murder, aggravated robbery and aggravated burglary for the death of Marion Bugdal, 52, who was found shot to death about 11 a.m. July 9 in his Bennington Avenue home on the East Side.

Police have accused New of shooting Bugdal and told his co-defendants Bugdal had gold bars in his home, which was heavily damaged in a July 2 fire, a prosecutor said.

Public meetings at East, Chaney

YOUNGSTOWN

Public meetings Thursday at East and Chaney high schools will allow participants to voice their opinions about school mascot names and offer input of CEO Krish Mohip’s first year in office. A meeting is set at 5 p.m. at East High School, 474 Bennington Ave., and at 7 p.m. at Chaney High School, 731 S. Hazelwood Ave.

East High’s Golden Bears mascot was replaced by the Panthers, and Chaney’s mascot was the Cowboys.

Mohip’s tenure has included expanding preschool from a half-day program four days per week to a full-day program five days a week, returning the district to a neighborhood schools structure and providing a larger, academic-centered after-school program.

Youngstown State University kicks off its 2017 Pace-setter United Way campaign at an event from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. today at the Kilcawley Fountain on the campus core. The event features hot dogs and Handel’s ice cream.
