Miazga’s late goal lifts U.S. over Nicaragua

CLEVELAND

Matt Miazga scored on a closer-range header from Graham Zusi’s corner kick in the 88th minute, giving the United States first place in its CONCACAF Gold Cup group with a 3-0 victory over Nicaragua on Saturday night.

Panama’s 3-0 win over Martinique meant the U.S. needed a three-goal win to move back over Los Canaleros into first. Joe Corona scored his first international goal in four years in the 37th minute and Kelyn Rowe doubled the lead in the 56th with his first international goal, but the U.S. squandered opportunities when Dom Dwyer and Corona took poor penalty kicks in the second half that easily were saved by Justo Lorente.

The U.S. had a two-man advantage when Zusi took his free kick from about 30 yards because Luis Copete was ejected in the 86th minute for his second yellow card and Luis Galeano was receiving treatment for an injury.

Miazga, a Chelsea defender playing his first international match since May 2016, had an open header near a post and scored his first goal in three national team appearances.

The U.S. has won its group in 13 of 14 Gold Cups, finishing second to Panama in 2011. The Americans play their quarterfinal Wednesday in Philadelphia against a third-place team from another group, likely Honduras, El Salvador or Jamaica; a second-place finish would have meant a U.S.-Costa Rica matchup.

Nebraska cornerback Jones has knee surgery

LINCOLN, Neb.

Nebraska cornerback Chris Jones will miss at least half of the season after knee surgery.

Coach Mike Riley said Saturday that Jones had surgery to repair his left meniscus. Recovery normally takes four to six months.

As a junior last season, The 6-foot, 195-pound Jones had three interceptions and 10 pass breakups. He also was recognized with honorable-mention All-Big Ten honors.

Jones had been slated to represent Nebraska in the Big Ten Media Day and Kickoff Luncheon in Chicago on July 24-25. Riley said Junior safety Aaron Williams will replace Jones, joining junior quarterback Tanner Lee and senior linebacker Chris Weber.

Former Patriots QB Babe Parilli dies at 87

FOXBOROUGH, Mass.

Babe Parilli, the former Patriots quarterback who starred in the team’s American Football League days, died Saturday. He was 87.

New England announced the death. The cause of death wasn’t disclosed.

Parilli played for the then-Boston Patriots from 1961 to 1967. He was voted to three AFL All-Star games and was the AFL’s Comeback Player of the Year in 1966.

Parilli was named to the All-AFL 10 Year Anniversary Team in 1971 and his 31 touchdown passes in 1964 were a team record until 2007. Parilli is fourth on the Patriots’ career passing list with 16,747 yards and is in the team’s Hall of Fame. He also was known as excellent holder and was nicknamed “gold finger.”

He began his pro career with the Green Bay Packers in 1952, and also played for the Cleveland Browns, Oakland Raiders, New York Jets and the CFL’s Ottawa Rough Riders. He was the backup to Joe Namath when the Jets won the Super Bowl in 1969.

Vito “Babe” Parilli was born in Rochester, Pa. — not far from Namath’s hometown of Beaver Falls. Both Parilli and Namath played under coach Bear Bryant in college, Parilli at Kentucky, and Namath at Alabama.
