Staff report

YOUNGSTOWN

The Junior Group of Goodwill Auction and Jewelry Sale will take place at 6:30 p.m. March 3 at Stambaugh Auditorium, 1000 Fifth Ave. The event has changed from previous years by eliminating the Saturday portion.

Tickets are available at these eight Goodwill stores: Austintown, Boardman, Calcutta, Hermitage, Pa., Liberty, New Castle, Pa., Salem, Warren, or at the Goodwill offices on Belmont Avenue. They also can be purchased online at www.goodwillyoungstown.org. The cost for advance tickets is $25 each. After Feb. 27, tickets will cost $30 each.

The auction and jewelry sale will feature a live auction of new items donated by businesses, a silent auction, basket auction, basket raffle of more than 100 baskets, 50-50 raffle, vintage clothing, hors d’oeuvres, cash bar and collectible jewelry.

Sponsors for this year’s event are Aim National Lease; Akron Children’s Hospital Mahoning Valley; B&I Management Co.; Briarfield/Ed and Diane Reese; Cohen & Co.; DCW Group; Farmers Trust Co.; Gasser Chair Co. Inc.; Hill, Barth & King LLC; PNC Bank; Republic Services; Pecchia Communications; and Vallourec Star.

During the cold months both sales and donations for Goodwill are down, so the proceeds from this event are needed to boost the budget during the lean time.

Junior Group of Goodwill volunteers have been preparing for the auction for several months. They are accepting donations especially sporting event and concert tickets, gift cards, hotel or trip packages, jewelry, services or products by local businesses, gift baskets, collectibles and cash. Donations valued at more than $125 will entitle the donor to two complimentary tickets to the event. Donors may give cash, and the group members will buy something on their behalf.

The event raised more than $59,000 last year, and more than 500 people attended the event. All proceeds are used to provide job training and employment services to people with disabilities and other barriers to employment such as homelessness, welfare, lack of education or lack of work experience. Goodwill assisted nearly 6,000 people in vocational services, amblyopia screening, social services to the visually impaired and Radio Reading services last year.
