FOWLER TOWNSHIP — Walter Hughes, one of two Brothers Regime motorcycle club members who survived being shot by a member of a rival motorcycle club in 2016, was arrested Saturday on a variety of charges.
Hughes, 42, of Homewood Avenue in Leavittsburg, was charged with three counts of carrying a concealed weapon, one of being a felon in possession of a firearm and single charges of driving under suspension and having an open container of alcohol in a motor vehicle.
Hughes spoke at a sentencing hearing last week in Trumbull County Common Pleas Court for David Bailes Jr., the man who shot Hughes, another Brothers Regime member and killed the Brothers Regime president and another member June 18, 2016, outside Shorty’s Place tavern on Highland Avenue in Warren Township.
A Fowler Township police officer said that when he made a traffic stop on the car Hughes was driving at 5:35 p.m. Saturday, he found that Hughes had no driver’s license and later found that Hughes had a firearm with no carrying-a-concealed-weapon permit, a knife and brass knuckles.
The officer also found a one-third full bottle of whiskey in the vehicle.
Hughes said he carries weapons because he was shot during the Shorty’s biker-club shootout, receives death threats all the time and takes medication for anxiety, depression, insomnia and post traumatic stress disorder.
