Curbstone Hall of Fame 2018 class announced

The 51st Curbstone Coaches Hall of Fame Banquet is scheduled for Sunday, May 6 with 12 new members set for enshrinement during ceremonies at Mr. Anthony’s Banquet Center, Boardman.

Former Youngstown State and NFL kicker Paul McFadden who played professionally for the Philadelphia Eagles, New York Giants and Atlanta Falcons will serve as guest speaker.

The 2018 class includes Don Andres (basketball, coach), Arthur Berquist (bowling), Dr. Raymond Duffett (contribution to sports), Jim Fox (track and field/cross country), Joseph J. “Blackie” Gennaro (posthumous, boxing), Laurie Gomez-Henes (track and field/cross country), Steve Jones (football), Michael Kernan (football), Todd Marian (golf), Ann Marie Martin (basketball), Ed Moore (special award) and Vindicator sports editor Ed Puskas (sports media).

Individual tickets are $60 each, tables of eight $480 and are available beginning in mid-January.

Jack Loew to speak at Curbstone luncheon

Local boxing trainer Jack Loew will be the guest speaker at Monday’s luncheon meeting of The Curbstone Coaches at the Avion Banquet Center on Western Reserve Road in Beaver Township.

The event begins at noon and the public is welcome to attend.

Ex-wife charged in Wright’s slaying

MEMPHIS, Tenn.

The ex-wife of former NBA player Lorenzen Wright has been charged in his slaying, more than seven years after his body was found in a field in his hometown of Memphis.

Memphis Police Director Michael Rallings said Saturday that Sherra Wright has been charged with first-degree murder in the death of Lorenzen Wright, who played for five teams over 13 seasons as a forward and center in the NBA.

Police and federal marshals in Riverside County, California, arrested 46-year-old Sherra Wright on Friday night on a fugitive from justice warrant, online records show.

Wright’s decomposing body was found in suburban Memphis on July 28, 2010 — 10 days after the 34-year-old was reported missing. He was shot multiple times. The seven-year investigation into his death has been one of the Memphis Police Department’s most high-profile unsolved cases.

Packers activate Rodgers from IR

GREEN BAY, Wis.

The Green Bay Packers activated quarterback Aaron Rodgers from injured reserve Saturday, a day before he starts Sunday in a must-win game at Carolina.

Rodgers broke his right collarbone at Minnesota on Oct. 15, had surgery and was placed on injured reserve on Oct. 20. He returned to practice on a limited basis on Dec. 2, was cleared by the team’s medical staff Tuesday night and took the first-team reps this week.

Dodgers acquire Kemp from Braves

LOS ANGELES

Matt Kemp is returning to the Los Angeles Dodgers as part of a five-player trade with the Atlanta Braves that includes cash.

The Dodgers are sending first baseman Adrian Gonzalez, pitchers Scott Kazmir and Brandon McCarthy and infielder Charlie Culberson and cash to Atlanta. Gonzalez has been designated for assignment by the Braves.

Kemp played for the Dodgers from 2006-14, hitting 182 home runs, fourth-most in Los Angeles history. Last season, the 33-year-old outfielder hit .276 with 19 homers, 64 RBIs and 23 doubles in 115 games with the Braves.

The 35-year-old Gonzalez helped the Dodgers win five straight National League West division titles. He was an All-Star in 2015 and led the NL in RBI in 2014, but went on the disabled list last season for the first time in his career.
