1862: The Second Battle of Bull Run begins in Prince William County, Va., during the Civil War; the result was a Confederate victory.

1916: Italy declares war on Germany during World War I.

1922: The first radio commercial airs on station WEAF in New York City; the 10-minute advertisement is for the Queensboro Realty Co., which had paid a fee of $100.

1955: Emmett Till, a black teen-ager from Chicago, is abducted from his uncle’s home in Money, Miss., by two white men after he had supposedly whistled at a white woman.(He was found slain three days later.)

1963: More than 200,000 people listen as the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. delivers his “I Have a Dream” speech in front of the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, D.C.

1968: Police and anti-war demonstrators clash in the streets of Chicago as the Democratic National Convention nominates Hubert H. Humphrey for president.

1992: Mahoning County commissioners want James Stratton, the county’s solid waste district chief, to investigate whether the county can block Canadian garbage from being dumped in the Carbon Limestone Landfill in Poland Township.

George Lardis, general manager of the Niles Saturn dealership, says his store has been selling Saturns as fast as they come in. But they won’t be coming in for a while, after a strike at the Lordstown fabricating plant stops the flow of 300 parts needed to build Saturns in Tennessee.

Jackson Township trustee James Evans says the township is sitting on salt deposits that have attracting the attention of developers that could spend $300 million to build a salt mine and extraction plant.

1977: J. Walter Dragelevich and Mahoning County Prosecutor Vincent Gilmartin announce the first cooperative program by two Ohio counties to catalogue habitual criminals, bring them to trial quickly and get them off the streets.

The Vindicator adds a new syndicated sports column written by Joan Ryan, wife of football quarterback Frank Ryan, that will report on major sport events from a woman’s point of view.

GF Business Equipment Inc. is awarded millions of dollars in major contracts to provide components for IBM and Digital Equipment Corp. that will boost the area economy and ease the concern of GF workers who have feared the loss of jobs.

1967: Eighteen veteran skydivers plunge into Lake Erie after missing their target by 10 miles. Only two have survived. One of the missing men is James Simmons, 20, of Warren, a sophomore at Youngstown University.

Mahoning County commissioner propose a $1.2 million expansion to the Mahoning Tuberculosis Sanatorium and Rehabilitation Hospital if voters approve a 1-mill levy.

VISTA (Volunteers in Service to America) will recruit workers in the Mahoning Valley for the war on poverty.

1942: The Rev. and Mrs. Willis McGill, Presbyterian missionaries visiting Mrs. McGill’s parents, the Rev. and Mrs. H.C. McAuley in Youngstown, thinks England’s chance of holding Egypt is less than 50-50 unless American troops go in.

Youngstown’s auxiliary firemen present the Youngstown Fire Department with a $422 resuscitator for No. 13 fire station in Fosterville.
