1992: Mahoning County commissioners want James Stratton, the county’s solid waste district chief, to investigate whether the county can block Canadian garbage from being dumped in the Carbon Limestone Landfill in Poland Township.
George Lardis, general manager of the Niles Saturn dealership, says his store has been selling Saturns as fast as they come in. But they won’t be coming in for a while, after a strike at the Lordstown fabricating plant stops the flow of 300 parts needed to build Saturns in Tennessee.
Jackson Township trustee James Evans says the township is sitting on salt deposits that have attracting the attention of developers that could spend $300 million to build a salt mine and extraction plant.

1967: Eighteen veteran skydivers plunge into Lake Erie after missing their target by 10 miles. Only two have survived. One of the missing men is James Simmons, 20, of Warren, a sophomore at Youngstown University.
Mahoning County commissioner propose a $1.2 million expansion to the Mahoning Tuberculosis Sanatorium and Rehabilitation Hospital if voters approve a 1-mill levy.
