YOUNGSTOWN

A childhood sidewalk chalk throwback made its way to the Youngstown State University campus Monday afternoon in a Chalk the Walks competition.

Students were tasked with drawing something that incorporated a visual representation of aspects of Youngstown that make it special – what the Student Activities Association calls “Youngstown Famous.”

Freshman students Madison Deiley and Helen Neff had a unique take on what makes Youngstown special to them.

“It’s the students,” said Neff.

Neff and Deiley first outlined “I [heart symbol] YSU!,” and then rather than coloring in their artwork, they filled it with students’ names who passed by.

Capturing every student is something Student Activities sought to do for this year’s Welcome Week, said Carolyn Jesko, Student Activities assistant director and graduate student.

“We just really wanted to give every student the opportunity to participate in Welcome Week activities, so we provided a variety of them,” Jesko said.

Deiley said she felt obligated to participate in all that she could during Welcome Week.

“It’s really just about getting that college experience, and this is it,” she said.
