Residents of The Blackburn Home enjoyed a special day in the neighborhood on Aug. 1.
The retirement home, located on Botsford Street, has had a strong relationship with the community for 83 years and schedules many outings for the independent senior adults who live there, but this one proved to be a memorable event.
A group of residents, staff and family members from the home had a field trip to the Poland library, where they spent some time learning about and touring the building. Deborah Liptak, Development Director for the Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County, greeted the visitors and gave an informative talk about the history and benefits of the modern library.
“Wow, who knew you could do so much with a library card,” Long-time Mahoning Valley resident Helen Brill said.
Barb Smith, Poland Branch Supervisor, let them know about many of the programs offered there. The seniors saw photos of craft workshops, children’s events and more. Lois Moorhead, who lives at The Blackburn Home, even got to try her hand at adult coloring, a growing form of relaxation therapy.
“I had my doubts, but these books are really nice for grown-ups,” Moorhead said.
Participants were given the opportunity to explore the library and the Friends’ Bookstore. Several of the ladies got a chance to talk to some of the library staff as they navigated the bookshelves, discussing favorite books and movies, and remembering family visits to the local library.
Following the talk and tour, The Blackburn Home group was treated to lunch at Kravitz’s Deli inside the library. They all played a card game in the community room, then picked up a few treats at the deli to go.
Michelle Rudge, the Home’s executive director, thanked the staff of the deli and the library for this great experience.
“We learned a lot. We enjoyed a close-up look of one of our community’s wonderful establishments. We ate well and had fun. It was a perfect day,” Connie Leathers, activity director, said.
