An East Side drug raid failed to turn up drugs but did reveal children living in conditions authorities called “deplorable.”

The Vindicator’s broadcast partner 21-WFMJ TV reported that agents from the Mahoning Valley Drug Task Force on Thursday morning raided a home suspected to have been used for drug trafficking near McGuffey and Jacobs roads.

Investigators found two children, ages 2 and 5, living among drug paraphernalia and needles.

The children were taken to a safe environment. An individual was arrested on a prior warrant.

Mahoning River sheen

Warren Township Fire Department and Ohio Environmental Protection Agency are investigating a possible foreign substance in the Mahoning River after a company noticed a sheen on the water Thursday evening near the bridge on Main Street, reported 21 WFMJ-TV, The Vindicator’s broadcast partner.

Firefighters said employees at ArcelorMittal steel plant workers noticed the substance in the water after they had problems with their water intake valves.

Officials believe the source of the substance is between downtown Warren and north of the plant. Firefighters put up booms to soak up substances in case the substance is oil.

Best Art Paper Award

YOUNGSTOWN

Robert Twomey, assistant professor of art - digital media at Youngstown State University, received the Best Art Paper Award at the 44th SIGGRAPH Conference on Computer Graphics and Interactive Techniques.

Twomey wrote the award-winning paper, “Transforming the Commonplace Through Machine Perception: Light-Field Synthesis and Audio-Feature Extraction in the Rover Project,” with Michael McCrea, research scientist for the Center for Digital Art and Experimental Media at the University of Washington.

The paper will also be published in a special edition of “Leonardo, The Journal of the International Society of the Arts, Sciences and Technology,” and includes visual documentation of the works exhibited in the art gallery during the convention.

OVI checkpoint

CANFIELD

The Mahoning County OVI Task Force announced that a sobriety checkpoint will take place in Mahoning County today to deter and intercept impaired drivers. Officers will be conducting a roadside check of drivers for alcohol and drug impairment. Specific details of the checkpoint will be announced later. Saturation patrols will also be conducted throughout the weekend.

Recruitment award

YOUNGSTOWN

The Youngstown State University Association for Women in Mathematics Student Chapter has been awarded the AWM Award for Professional Development at the MathFest Conference in Chicago. The chapter was presented with a certificate and a $100 honorarium. These students attended the event: Monica Busser, Julie Phillis, Alanis Chew, Sarah Elizabeth Odidika, Mirella Boulus, Hannah Haynie, Jacqueline Chapman, Ashley Amendol, Lexi Rager, Christine Langer and Nathalie Halavick.

The purpose of the award was to reward a student chapter for its recruitment and development of students’ professional involvement in mathematics.
