Valley’s unemployment rate up more than 1 percent in July


YOUNGSTOWN — The Mahoning Valley’s non-seasonally adjusted jobless rate jumped to 7.4 percent in July 2017 from 6.1 percent reported in July 2016.

The number of unemployed across Mahoning, Trumbull and Columbiana counties was 11,900, up from 9,800 reported during the previous July. The number of employed dropped to 148,800 from 150,500 reported the previous July.

The civilian labor force, or the sum of the employed and unemployed, was 161,000 in July 2017, up from 160,000 reported in July 2016.

Ohio’s seasonally-adjusted unemployment rate was 5.2 percent in July 2017, up from 5 percent in June 2017.

The U.S. unemployment rate for July was 4.3 percent, down from 4.4 percent in June and down from 4.9 percent in July 2016.
